Concerts on the Square - we go to maybe once each season. 4th of July - I can see it from my house so unless I close the blinds and stay inside I can't miss it. My wife and I also attend and volunteer at BBQ Blues and Bluegrass, Martinis in the Garden and the DBA fundraisers. And then there's the hundreds of volunteer hours that We've logged at the schools ,,, the reputation of which keeps everyone's property values high and therefore contributes to the City budget - which.. I assume... helps pay for things like fireworks.

I think I do my part.

We just don't like the beach party.

I didn't go this year, but I have been for several years. My kids don't like it at all, and I can see their point... so I see no reason to drag them there. The pool was much more fun.

Maybe I'll try it with just the wife one year. I just don't think it's necessarily all that much fun for the kids.

I went to the Beach Party for the first time this year and had a great time (Hubs went without me a few years back). Hubs and I have no children, so we just walked through the sand area, looked at all of the kids having fun, and went on our merry little way - to the food and band. We left a little before midnight - could not believe how many people were still out there - had a great time and am looking forward to going again next year. We were very impressed with the event. Great job DBA - can't wait until your next event!

Scrooge, it's your choice. If you went, I don't know why. If you didn't, your remarks don't have much credibility. A lot of people went and had a good time.

BTW, since the Beach Party is a major fund raiser for the Decatur Business Association and helps support the fireworks on the 4th and the Concerts on the Square, I assume you'll stay away from those, too.

Call me party pooper, I just don't think that the beach party is even remotely fun. My idea of a good time with my family does not include cramming them with 100 or so other toddlers onto a dirty, damp plot of inch deep sand sitting on oily asphalt ... and then standing in line for an hour to get them on on some sort of jumping apparatus for five minutes. And.... all of this on a day where the heat index is 100 degrees.

OH... and the kicker is paying $40 for the privilege .. plus extra money for food, drink, etc.

Nope... we just head to our neighborhood pool or have friends over for a cookout and pull out the slip and slide on Beach Party Day... at least the pool is relatively uncrowded then b/c everyone is sweating it out on the inch of sand downtown.
