Kudzu Takes Over Atlanta
Apparently the popular History Channel series “Life After People” featured Atlanta, along with Chicago and London, last night. And I for one am pissed that I didn’t get to watch the slow deterioration of my hometown! Where were you “informed” blogosphere and ATL know-it-alls!?
I guess I’ll have to make do with watching clips on the show’s website.
From what I can tell, it looks like Chicago got a majority of the focus in last night’s episode as the Chicago River flooded downtown, Wrigley Field was blanketed in ivy and the cities two tallest buildings (Sears & Hancock) crumbled to the ground. Here in Atlanta, the illustrated results of a human-free environment were limited to kudzu-run-amok and the quick proliferation of feral pigs. (If that isn’t a reflection of stereotypes about the South, I don’t know what is!)
But after watching simulations of that quick-growing vine taking over our city streets and transit lines, I’ve been inspired to preemptive action. I am calling for the immediate importation of thousands of feral goats to the city. I want to see kudzu-eating goats everywhere! Not just at Decatur cemetery, but on our streets and in our neighborhoods, eating everything in sight! And once they’ve dealt with the kudzu, we’ll use our army of goats to combat those crafty feral pigs! Goats v. Pigs! Goats v. Pigs!
My political future is bright. Oh yes.

Is this a valley girl dystopia?
The kudzu really is taking over. If you walk around and look at the trees in the greenbelts of our city, alot of them are being choked off by the stuff. Look at the trees on the greenbelt behind sycamore in the decatur heights subdivision.
I have it in my own yard and its a constant battle to keep at bay.
As part of the stimulus, clearing kudzu from trees in Atlanta was an idea that did not get much voting support.
I was driving down I75N some time ago and noticed everyone zooming by choked off trees in the median on the way to places we all think is so important to race around to (while most people are running around to hide the meaninglessness in their lives) and thought…nature is blatantly showing us very clearly that we are neglecting the important things in life and focusing on the trivialities. And if we keep acting like we aren’t part of nature but separate from it, nature will give us a swift wake up call. Those choked off trees are a message. Keep zooming by, or slow down and listen to your heart.
My excuse is that Comcast still isn’t working right with my Tivo. That series is awesome.
From where I’m sitting English ivy is as formidable a foe as kudzu. It’s rampant and doesn’t die back in the winter.
I just set the “Life After People” episode about Atlanta (titled “Outbreak”) to record on Sunday 5/3 @ 10pm.
It is also on again Monday 5/4 @ 2am and 11pm and Tuesday 5/5 @ 3am.
There are several recipes for using kudzu as human and animal food. Google kudzu recipes and see what you find.
