Bringing in the New Year in Decatur
Decatur Metro | December 30, 2008 | 5:17 pmAfter an especially hectic holiday run around this year, the wife and I are thinking a quiet New Year’s Eve at home is just what the doctor ordered.
But that conversation also made me realize that other than Tastings’ New Year’s Eve party, I’m not really clued in on the full extent of New Year’s Eve activities going on in Decatur this year.
So gentle readers, once again I seek your sage advice and drunken memories:
Where in Decatur is the best place to bring in the New Year?
BrickStore….wife and I are going to Parkers on Ponce beforehand.
I heard today that Palate is having a casino night. Sounds like fun.
Eddie’s Attic is having some great bluegrass bands and a champagne toast at midnight.
If I didn’t have a party to go to, I’d be checking out Dexter Romweber at Twain’s. As it is, we’ll try to catch his 6:00 mini-set at Decatur CD and knock back a high gravity with Warren, Elliot, and Austin.
Eddie’s Attic bluegrass show features Packway Handle (an Athens-origin band that is UNBELIEVABLE), The Little Country Giants, and The Barnrats. I have not heard the last two bands mentioned, but P.H. is composed of 5 very fine musicians, and they sing and play both old bluegrass and new bluegrass. Hopefully, they will offer up “Satan Lives in Outer Space” as one of them. The mandolin player plays left-handed and backward, and is the best I’ve heard. The fiddle player has a Ph.D. in genetics from UGA — guess that’s in his suitcase for some later career. Anyway, you wont’ be sorry to spend $25 to hear all three bands, and Eddie’s is a non-smoking venue and has good food too.
The Grange! The Irish know how to have a fun time. It’s like being with friends anyway as the Comers are such a good group of folks! Can’t think of a more perfect place – friends, family, great service and food – good times!
