My friends who live off S. Candler interrupted a robbery at their house on Friday night. Fortunately nothing was taken and the police arrived within “seconds” they said. They had a detective and a dog and the works. Yay for the fast response, but finding someone in your home is certainly scary.

I would be surprised if it took the police over 3 minutes to get there after receiving the call. They’re usually very fast.

Criminals overall probably aren’t that smart, but most are smart enough to avoid committing robberies in the middle of Decatur, given the much greater police presence and likelihood of getting caught. These must have been some of the dumber ones.

The Subway robbery was far from the City – we have one, but it’s downtown.

You have to factor into the response time the time that it took to get the dispatcher to understand what was happening (excited people aren’t always clear), the fact that there were several calls for them to handle (on the same incident), and then the dispatcher had to give the call to the officers, who usually do respond with 2 or 3 minutes after they receive that call. All in all, I still think Decatur has much better response time than DeKalb.

I’m curious, JP, if you aren’t feeling safe, where did you move from? Overall, crime in these parts isn’t much worse, or maybe even better, than other large metropolitan areas.

i thought the average decatur police response time is 2-3 minutes
it had to take them 2-3 minutes to get the cash register out??
I am not blaming police for this but after hearing about the armed robbery downtown a little while ago etc…
and the subway robbery as well
it just isn’t feeling safe right now…and that was our intention of moving here
I am sure it will all pass with time and feel more secure soon…

I was there when it took place also. It was two guys who came inside. I also ran out as they were occupied with the cash register. I couldn’t believe that it was going on during the dinner rush with so many people in the restaurant. I can’t believe they could get away, with so many people calling 911 while they were still in the restaurant.

I am in shock about this–I was there with family and friends after having a nice night making gingerbread houses at Greenes.
We left about 7:30pm…I just can’t believe it
We moved here about 5 months ago and I am in shock about all of the reports of crime and break ins and violence in the area and Dekalb county. I had no idea…makes me nervous about living here…Are these

Here is the description that was in a letter our landlord left on our doors today:

It was reported to our office that last night during the dinner rush, three men robbed Felini’s restaurant at gunpoint. It was reported that these three males were wearing hankerchefs to cover their faces.

It went on to say the suspects had not been apprehended yet, call the Decatur PD with info, etc.
