To Rick….There was a great article yesterday from the AP bureau chief in Austria that echoed your sentiments. As an on-again, off-again expat, I concur. It’s a great day to be an American when people around the world applaud, rather that vilify us.

The last time Americans had this kind of broad support was on 9/12/2001. The vast majority of the world embraced us. I remember living in China at the time and strangers coming up to me, crying and hugging me because I was an American. Unfortunately, our leadership at the time squandered all of that goodwill in a very short period of time, and reinforced it for seven years.

I cannot thank my fellow countrymen enough for restoring the world’s faith in America. There are millions of us living overseas, both part and full-time, and yesterday’s vote makes this a safer world, not only for those of us “over there” but for all of us here at home.

I work for a company that has international offices. 12 of us were sitting around a table in a conference call with the London office. The people in our office were very very excited today, but I think the guys on the phone in London were even more excited. They were completely amazed that he won and one of them said to us, “Congratulations to all of you. America did the right thing.”
I can already tell the amount of respect these international resources have for our country has increased tenfold. After 8 years of a dark cloud hanging over us its like a huge weight has been lifted. Some of the animosity we received in the last 8 years may not have always been justified, but we definitely had a huge perception problem and that has been transformed almost overnight. All I can say…..Thank God!!!

I was not an Obama supporter, but truly want this historic moment to coalesce in the coming year or two into actual change in our government and those elected to serve us.

The magnificence of Obama’s victory even made my cancer treatment more pleasant today. People sitting around getting infusions and marveling at what it all means, how proud we are to be Americans, our renewed hope for the future.

My pride and love of this country does “ebb and flow” with it’s politics. Sorry. I actually believe America has made mistakes and we can learn from our mistakes if we acknowledge our mistakes. I’m happy when things are good and sad when they are bad. That seems quite human to me. I don’t support anything unconditionally, except my wife, family and two dogs.
