    Before I Forget…

    Decatur Metro | September 26, 2008 | 10:10 pm

I’ll be running around the next few days, so posting may be a little light, but I just wanted to mention that Decatur Metro turned 1 year old today! (If you include its first week when it was called “Blogging Decatur”)

It sure has come a long way from just blogging to myself and a couple random folks that thought I was the official city website. Seriously, “beyond expectations” doesn’t even begin to describe it for me.

Thanks to everyone for reading and participating over the past 12 months. Who ever knew that community involvement could be so fun!?

Congratulations, Nick! The majority of blogs don’t last a year. They are easy to start, but require a lot of care and feeding, even when you don’t feel like it.

A mutual acquaintance who probably would prefer to not be identified made this comment to me just last week, speaking of the three general Decatur blogs: “You guys are becoming quite a force!”

I’m particularly impressed with your ability to conjure conversation, even if it gets rather vicious sometimes.

Blogs are like trains. They start slow, gradual build up speed, and then have lots of momentum. Your readership and participation should continue to grow drmatically in your second year.

Wow, happy birthday, Decatur Metro! I recently moved to Decatur, and this blog has been awesome in keeping me up to date on the latest news and also in making me feel like I’m part of a great community. Keep up the fantastic work!

      Thanks David, JohnD and KC!

David, if this thing has gotten bigger than I ever expected (even though I knew that many residents shared our passion for the city). Thanks again for all the friendly competition! Keeps me on my toes…even on those days when I can write coherent sentences.

The conversations do occasionally get out of hand, but its only a handful. Compared to the dozens (hundreds?) or good conversations we’ve had over the last year, I’d say its quite a good ratio.

The best and most entertaining Decatur read out there, Decaturite. As a journalist, I love it for the info and engagement. As a resident, it’s an excellent take on what’s bustling around me. Keep it up, my good man.

(Keep me in mind if you need someone to write a blurb for your eBook.)

Paraphrasing Churchill, Decatur Metro and the “civic” web is barely at the end of the beginning … many more successes to you! Here’s my tribute: my site is part mash-up and part social blog and I have no better source for Decatur-related information than your blog. Your sober, relevant, and congenial blogging is a great asset to your readers here and on my civic network. Take your vitamins and get at least 7 hours of rest a night – we want you around long, long time! Best wishes for the next year of contributing to your community!
