While in Carmel, CA recently, my wife and I were invited to assist Nancy Costello, a 90 year old woman who for over 40 years has collected expired food from supermarkets and delivered it to hungry migrant farm workers as much as 60 miles away from her home. We met her at a Safeway at 9 am on a Monday morning and helped her load a Ford F-450 truck with fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat and bread. We then followed her to a Trader Joe’s and repeated the process. And then we watched as she drove away to begin her rounds. She does this 6 days a week! She has been called the “Saint of the Hungry” and, while working with her, we truly felt that we were in the presence of a saint.
