Once Deemed Apathetic, Younger Voters Lift Obama

7 01 2008

OK, its been a few days since the press finally conceded the possibility of an Obama presidency, but I’ve been busy.

Doing what you might ask? Things, I might respond.

As anyone that has ever glimpsed a look at this blog on a semi-regular basis might have noticed, I’ve had a thing for Obama for quite a while. As a democratic voter that falls in a younger demographic, you must all but assume that I echo the sentiments of the once blog-worthy Obama-Girl. (”I gotta crush…”)

Just a couple of days ago, I referenced the Des Moines Register poll that gave Obama the substantial lead over Hillary that ultimately materialized in Iowa. Prior to that, at the start of December, I hopefully suggested that the press was waking up to the potential of Obama after polls began to show him ahead in Iowa for the first time.

Well, since these last postings things have gotten full-on crazy. While Obama was never discounted, only a couple weeks ago media personalities, used to establishment-as-usual, were still doubting his potential on the air. How strong was the urge for “change”? Could he break through the Clinton establishment? Well, apparently the question should have been…how fed up are the nation’s young people with the current administration?

As the Iowa Caucus was first to demonstrate, young voters will not be sitting out this election. We’re out of the woodwork and into the voting booth to the tune of nearly 6 in 10 under 30 voting for Obama. We’re also now leading a 10-point advantage for Obama in New Hampshire.

The disenfranchised, apathetic generation-Y, which grew up spoiled by 90’s prosperity and grunge rock and then gagged and tied by two terms of Bush (thanks to the security-obsessed in ‘04), is sick and tired of “Waiting on the World to Change“. Thanks to Obama we have our opening and we’d be morons not to take it.

Watch out Washington bureaucrats, here comes your children’s candidate.
