From Decatur Police…
On Friday, May 26, 2017 at approximately 12:00 am, Decatur Police responded to The Pinewood Restaurant in the 200 block of West Ponce De Leon Avenue in reference to an armed robbery. An employee stated she was exiting the rear of the business when one suspect pointed a handgun at her, forced her to her knees and began asking questions about how many people were still inside and where money was kept. She was forced back into the restaurant and placed on the floor. Two suspects entered the business and rounded up the additional four victims inside of the restaurant. The victims were placed on the floor with their hands bound and questioned about the whereabouts of cash. The suspects also demanded car keys, cell phones, wallets and weapons. The suspects took cash from the business and the personal belongings (purses, wallets, phones, keys) from the five victims and fled. The business was closed at the time of the robbery. No injuries were reported. The suspects were described as follows:
Suspect #1: Black male, early to mid-20’s, approximately 5’5” with a slender build, wearing a dark (possibly gray) hooded sweatshirt, black mask, gloves, blue jeans and armed with a handgun.
Suspect #2: Black male, early to mid-20’s, approximately 5’8” with a slender build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black mask, gloves, blue jeans and armed with a handgun.
Scary. Glad no one was injured.
Catching up on some interesting Decatur restaurant news. Eater reported late last week…
The Pinewood has plans for growth at 254 West Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur. One of Atlanta’s favorite spots to sip bourbon, the cocktail bar is expanding into the space next door that was previously home to Decatur Bikes. The project will result in “a brand-new facade, full-service lounge area, various private dining options, extended weekend hours, and refreshed menus,” according to a Thursday morning announcement.
According to Eater, the space will be designed by Square Feet Studio, who also designed their Mercury space at Ponce City Market. Pinewood plans to remain open throughout the renovation.
Eater just published a map-listicle(?) of the 18 “essential” bars in and around Atlanta.
The list runs the gamut from iconic dive bars like Clermont Lounge and Northside Tavern, to hipster hangs like Holeman & Finch and The Porter, to Atlanta classics like Manuel’s and Atkins Park.
Decatur rounds out the final 4 spots on the list with the following Decatur establishments:
- The Pinewood
- Brick Store Pub
- Leon’s Full Service
- Kimball House
And not to be the guy who closes his posts with a question in a desperate attempt to drum up conversation, BUT.. “Looking at the breadth of the full list, would you have included other Decatur watering holes on this list??”

Decatur, lend me some sugar, I am your neighbor! PWTR
The above scrawl on the brown-papered windows of the old Cakes and Ale location along West Ponce de Leon Ave in downtown Decatur and an Outkast-inspired tweet were the only initial clues we had thus far regarding the new establishment taking over the built-out restaurant space.
The spot’s name and logo certainly sounded and looked more like a restaurant than a children’s clothing store or, say, an organic local cat food store, but what KIND of restaurant was it? An email inquiry to the address on the restaurant’s website garnered this reply…
Regional inspired cocktails and food
So I guess we’ll have to wait to hear more!
