Oakhurst Students Collect “Change For Haiti”

February 8, 2010 | 4:47 pm

Anne writes in…

The students of Oakhurst Elementary are presently holding a change drive entitled “Change for Haiti” in which the funds collected will go towards UNICEF’S “School-in-a-Box” Program providing temporary schools for children in disaster zones. Each “School-in-a-Box”, which costs $232, contains enough school supplies for 80 children.

This idea grew from 2 of Oakhurst’s very own students who were wanting to do something for the children of Haiti following the devastating earthquake. The third graders are collecting and counting/rolling the change and using their knowledge of estimation, multiplication and money as they make real life connections all while raising money for a good cause. It also draws close a real world example of Empathy and Caring, one of the design principles of Expeditionary Learning. By last Friday, the end of the first week, Oakhurst had collected well over $1000!

“Change for Haiti” will continue until this Friday, February 12th.

Tonight at the Dalton Gallery: First Grade Fish!

December 4, 2009 | 4:25 pm

Oakhurst fish

Get on over to Agnes Scott’s Dalton Gallery right now!  Emily sends in this email…

Tonight in the Dalton Gallery

5-7 p.m.

AN EXHIBITION OF FISH

By Oakhurst Elementary’s First Graders

Stop in to experience the fish swimming around the gallery! Professors Nell Ruby and Lock Rogers designed and taught a project to 100 first graders inspired by by William Nixon’s “Salmon Run.”

The young students first visited the “Still Water” exhibition where they were given a tour by ASC students

  • Victoria Campbell ‘12
  • Arianne Kahn ‘10
  • Olivia White ‘09
  • & Lauren Whitton ‘10.

Then, at the elementary school, Professors Ruby and Rogers focused their program on the form and function of fish bodies.  With the Oakhurst Elementary art teacher, Amy Evans, the students made their own fish, who are now swimming around the Dalton Gallery!

Sell Your “Vintage” Stuff at Junktique

October 19, 2009 | 10:34 am

junktique decatur

On November 15th, the Solarium will host “Junktique”, an “upscale community yard sale” that benefits Oakhurst Elementary School.  Part yard sale, part artist market, part entertainment, Junktique sounds a lot like some sort of Decaturite nirvana.  (Buy stuff, drink, AND support a local school!?  So this is what Aristotle’s fourth level of happiness feels like!)

For $35, you can be amongst other vintage sellers on the Solarium lawn.  However, be warned…the word “vintage” is only open to so much interpretation.

From Junktique’s website…

Vintage is…

furniture that you would buy yourself, cool home furnishings, jewelery & accessories, other cool stuff!

Vintage is not…

items the Salvation Army won’t take, moldy paperbacks from the basement, boutique products you sell (see Artists’s Market page).

I guess the moldy paperback sellers will have to create their own festival that supports local education. :-)
