If you missed Sunday’s Decatur Candidates Forum this past Sunday in Decatur Heights, moderated by freelance writer and AJC contributor Bill Banks, it has now been graciously provided for your viewing online!
The good folks in Decatur Heights have again done the city a public service and set up a public forum for all City Commission and School Board candidates. This year the event will take place Sunday, October 25th from 3-5p at its usual location at The Church at Decatur. More details below!
Now the AJC is also reporting that there is also another action item of “Superintendent Search Finalist announcement if process is complete.”, but I haven’t found that on the CSD agenda myself. But they note…
Between August 18 and Sept. 16 the board interviewed eight candidates, and Board Chair Garrett Goebel previously said it would announce up to three finalists. But the second action item clearly indicates a single-person announcement.
UPDATE: Yeah, so qualifying is actually still open until Wednesday afternoon. My bad. Up above is the updated list with additions highlighted in yellow. Guess we’ll receive a final one of these tomorrow.
Decaturish reminds us that qualifying just closed OPENED! for the November election. So here’s the full CURRENT! list of candidates by district, courtesy of the city.
Looks like every open seat will have two contenders and Scott Drake will have an opponent for his District 1 seat. We’re still waiting for formal announcements from three of these candidates and will post them once if/when we receive them.
The Committee to Elect Tasha White sent in this announcement…
Tasha White is announcing her intent to seek election to the City Schools of Decatur Board of Education District 2 Post B seat. District 2 covers most of the area within the city limits south of the rail line and a neighborhood near Decatur High School.
Ms. White’s goals are to:
Maintain a talented and diverse team of school leaders, teachers and staff who are committed to excellence for all children,
Foster a positive relationship and partnership with the Decatur City Commission in order to achieve mutually beneficial goals,
Ensure each child, regardless of ability level, receives a high quality education that is equitable and challenging
Address student growth through fiscally responsible measures maintaining our community’s high education standards.
Ms. White earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Tuskeegee University. Since becoming a resident of Decatur, she has been very active with Create Community for Decatur. As a member of this diverse group of civic leaders and community members, she was instrumental in organizing the Black Lives Matter coalition. She has been an active volunteer in her children’s school and recreational activities. Her bio further notes her experience with being on the board of a Parent Teacher Organization, and currently she runs two small businesses from her home. Ms. White has three children, two of whom currently attend City of Decatur schools.
