Decatur CodeRed Sends Out Flash Flood Warning

January 24, 2010 | 6:54 pm

Decatur just sent out a CodeRed Flash Flood Warning. The AJC reports that flood warnings will remain in effect throughout the evening and into Monday morning.

I haven’t been out all day, so all I can report is that, yes, the muddy, basement river has returned.  But there are a couple of more relevant and useful Twitter reports of flooding in and around the city of Decatur.

  • @claymaker posted two photos (one and two) of flooding around his house.
  • @DecStan reports “Serious flooding on Scott Blvd (#DecaturGA) in low spot between Clairemont and Superior.” Does he mean between Clairemont on Ponce @ Westchester?

What’s it doing around you?

CSD: City Planning and Foresight Prevented School Flooding

September 22, 2009 | 12:41 pm

I inquired with Asst. Superintendent Thomas van Soelen about the extent of flooding at CSD facilities.  Bottomline is that while there were a couple issues, overall CSD is grateful to the city for its stormwater management planning.

Here’s Thomas’ response…

No official flooding.

Summary of leaks that have been rectified:

* Winnona Park: 2 rooms and cafeteria, debris washed down onto the drainage covers (even though we wash them every day)

* Oakhurst: slight amount of water at cafeteria

Kudos to the city of Decatur for their fine work in stormwater management. Their planning and foresight prevented flooding in our facilities.

College Heights Flooding

September 21, 2009 | 6:50 pm

Irishlass sends in these pics of flooding of the lake at Roy Moss Park across the street from College Heights school.  According to Lass…

It’s a flood plain serving it’s purpose well these past 7/8 days.

She also adds…

And a tree down in my neighbor’s yard on Garland Ave, which faces onto Roy Moss Park, missed his house by inches so feeling pretty lucky over here.

Atlanta / Decatur Flooding Updates

September 21, 2009 | 4:26 pm

oakhurst creek

Nelliebelle sent in this pic of the “new Oakhurst Creek.”

Use this post to report flooding around Decatur and Atlanta.

I’ve given over the right column to Twitter updates for the moment to keep folks updated on the latest flooding reports in the area.

Stay safe out there everyone and don’t drive through any pools of water too deep to see the bottom.

Peachtree Creek No Longer An Afterthought

September 21, 2009 | 2:59 pm

Medlock Park Under Peachtree Creek Flooding

David Kaufman’s excellent book, Peachtree Creek, portrayed one of the metro area’s most important watersheds as the collector of the objects and people that the city wished it could forget.  The result was a book filled with contrasting moments of both deep insight and beautiful despair.  Because it was the place that few visited or ever thought about, it could reveal more about the city in which it flowed than the Coke Museum or Margaret Mitchell House ever could.

However, record amounts have rain have suddenly put this once-forgotten creek back in the headlines.

The creek’s watershed covers much of the northeast metro area inside of I-285.  Up in Buckhead, the AJC reports of major flooding in some homes thanks to the swollen creek.  And a little closer to home, the South Fork of Peachtree Creek continues to flood Medlock Park (recent home of crawfish), just north of Decatur.  Druid Hills Youth Sports Board President James Laubenthal links to some new pics and writes in…

We are trying to get assistance from the County to try and find a fix for the on-going problem.  One of the issues is the ever-increasing vegetation and debris at the Willivee Road bridge over the creek. The debris acts as a strainer and slows down the flow, and the back up begins.

Crawfish Invade Medlock Park

September 18, 2009 | 10:16 am

My apologies if you’ve already clicked over to this link, but these pics, linked to by Fencesitter, demand more exposure.

Apparently the flooding has been so bad up at Medlock Park, just north of the Decatur city limits, that the crawdaddies are movin’ in!

These are just a couple of the pics posted on the Druid Hills Youth Sports webpage.

Hello Rain

August 28, 2009 | 11:11 am

Lots of rain in the area this morning.

Flash-flood warnings cover most of the metro area until 2:45p this afternoon. Decatur’s Code Red Weather Alert just issued a flood warning.

Up to 4 inches of rain is expected.

Roads are flooded. My basement is flooding more than usual.  My feet are wet.

Captain Obvious out.
