Best Pokemon Go Spots In and Around Decatur

pokemon_go_logo

Pokemon Go has swept the globe, including here in Decatur.  And why wouldn’t it?

At it’s core, Pokemon Go is an urban game.  One that encourages walking (to hatch eggs and catch pokemon) and density (the more people, the more Pokemon).

And if you don’t play (here’s a tutorial to get you going), you might be surprised that it also subtlety raises the profile of public art in communities.  How?  Because, more often than not, “Pokestops” are painted murals, statues and monuments around town.  So while the Old Courthouse isn’t a Pokestop (a place to collect Pokeballs and Potions), many of the Living Wall murals around town are.  Kinda cool, I’d say.

As such, Decatur is a pretty good place to play the game.  We may not have the density of downtown Atlanta or Midtown to catch a Dragonite or a Snorlax (I know, non-players are now wondering what the heck I’m babbling on about), but we have great sidewalks, public art galore and plenty of places to put up your feet and battle with your friends.  (Not to mention a certain park that’s currently a “nest” for the most popular Pokemon of all.)

That’s a big reason why you see people playing the game all over the city right now.

So, let’s get right down to it.  Fellow Pokemon Go trainers, where are the best places to catch Pokemon in and around Decatur?  Where are your favorite gyms?

This should be an interesting thread.  ðŸ™‚

Google Fiber Arrives in Atlanta, But Not Yet in Decatur

google fiber atlanta

Google Fiber sent around this message earlier today….

We’re excited to share the news. Google Fiber has arrived in Atlanta. Sign-ups begin today in a few neighborhoods to start—and we’ll be bringing Fiber to more of Atlanta in the coming months. You’ll be among the first to know when sign-ups open in your area.

Have friends who may also be interested in Fiber? Let them know they can check their address at google.com/fiber/atlanta to stay updated. You can also share the graphic below.

When you click thru, the site states…

Sign-ups are open until September 29 in Midtown East and Piedmont Heights

And when you imput a Decatur address it says…”Pre-construction sign-ups open soon”

So I guess Decaturites will have to wait a bit longer.  But for those eager, I’m sure hearing that Google Fiber is getting up and running in intown Atlanta is welcoming news!

Google Fiber Hut Installed in Downtown Decatur

Finally!  Something better than secondhand hearsay from a “survey guy” wandering the neighborhoods regarding Google Fiber!

Marcia took these photos of the arrival and installation of the Google Fiber hut in downtown Decatur last Friday.   This is definitely the most visible sign that Google Fiber is coming to Decatur thus far.

An unofficial map of permits issued for Google around Atlanta shows there are a variety of Google Fiber Huts popping up around the metro.

The Google Fiber website has Atlanta in the “construction” phase of work.   After that it’s just “Sign Up” and “Installation”, so it seems like things are truckin’ along.

Experience Oakhurst Porchfest in Virtual Reality!

Sure it’s been a couple of months since Porchfest took over Oakhurst on a lovely Sunday afternoon in October.  But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still new and interesting iterations of “coverage” of the event popping up online.  And heck if we aren’t gonna show it to you!

Grab your Google cardboard headset and check out this latest submission from the band Van Helton!

Want to experience Porchfest all over again? Perhaps your face wasn’t fully melted the first time around? Well today is your lucky day. The folks at the Van Helton fan club brought out some high tech cameras to the event and filmed Van Helton in 360 degrees for your Virtual Reality (VR) pleasure.

Apparently those fan club folks are pretty busy with their day jobs, because they just finished putting the experience together. Better late than never, right?

If you have a Google Cardboard headset, you can download a VR app that includes the Porchfest experience for both Apple and Android smartphones:

  • Apple iTunes Store — https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/foundry-45-virtual-reality/id1058799548?ls=1&mt=8

  • Google Play Store — https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foundry45.f45viewercardboard

If you don’t have Cardboard, you can order one from here:

https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/get-cardboard/

Alternatively, the NY Times sent out a million (literally) Cardboard headsets a couple of weeks ago so ask around, and you might be able to find one from a friend.

You should download the app over wifi. There’s a lot of content so the app is huge. A future version will be set up so that you can dynamically download the content you want.

The fan club team also put a couple of 360 degree videos on YouTube 360:

One final word of caution — Van Helton music has been known to rock so hard that fans’ faces end up melting to the floor. So, please try to limit your exposure to one or two hours at a time.

Cheers!

Van Helton

The Proposed Location of Decatur’s Google Fiber Hut

The Decatur City Commission is scheduled to vote tonight on a lease agreement for land for Google to build a “Fiber Hut” in the City of Decatur.

According to a note from Project Manager Lena Stevens to City Manager Peggy Merriss, Google has selected a 1,600 square foot parcel “on Atlanta Avenue, adjacent to the Ebster Pool pump-house and Police Department parking lot.”

The “10×30 foot structures…house the telecommunications and fiber interface equipment necessary for Google to provide high-speed internet. Each hut supports about 20,000 homes”., according to the Cary Citizen.

Here’s a satellite view of the area (courtesy of Google, no less)…

Additionally, here are the proposed changes to the site and the cost to Google, according to Ms. Stevens’ note…

The proposed license area is approximately 1,600 square feet, and includes 10 x 30 foot structure as well as a black vinyl coated chain link fence around the entire perimeter of the site. An existing retaining wall will be removed along Atlanta Avenue and the land will be graded in a gentle slope away from the street. New retaining walls will be built along the east and south side of the license area. Two trees will be replaced on the site and vegetative screening will be planted along the fence line. A photo of a typical Google Fiber Hut Site is included on Figure 1 on the following page. Google Fiber has agreed to pay an annual fee of $3 per square foot for each Network Hut Site, resulting in a payment of $4800 for Hut Site #121.
