ROSSINI’S CINDERELLA
A Tale of Enchantment
In search of a kind woman to be his bride, Prince Ramiro and his valet swap identities to pay a visit to Don Magnifico and his three daughters, Clorinda, Tisbe, and Angelina (Cinderella). Ramiro, disguised as his valet, is enchanted by the beautiful Angelina, who is mistreated by Don Magnifico and her sisters. Later at the Prince’s ball, a gorgeous stranger arrives, horrifying Clorinda and Tisbe who had hoped the Prince would choose one of them to be his wife. Upon leaving the ball early, the lovely stranger leaves the Prince a bracelet with which he can use to later find her. Searching his kingdom, the Prince discovers the identity of the lovely stranger in the most unlikely of places. Gioachino Rossini’s Cinderella, a variation on the classic peasant-girl-becomes-princess love story, combines lively comedy with a poignant tale of the triumph of kindness. This opera is suitable for children, so parents and grandparents bring your little princes and princesses.

They should offer the Eastlake Marta Station redevelopment to Amazon for their new second headquarters. Probably too late for Avondale Station though there is a lot more adjacent commercial property there.
Either of those offer a small fraction of the amount of space they are looking for (100+ acres).
Assembly in Doraville might have the space and right location, but I think they ruined any chance by letting a car dealership take space there (and I doubt Doraville could afford to even contend for the site). Fort Mac checks a lot of the boxes, but the nearby amenities are lacking. Midtown near GA Tech is an obvious choice, but don’t know where they’d find the space.
Why not right in downtown Atlanta? Have you ever seen the first season of Walking Dead? That was largely filmed in the Gulch around the stadiums and they didn’t have to do a thing to make it look like the end of the world. It’s close to transportation and businesses and, besides railroad tracks, there’s really nothing there. But frankly, compared to Seattle prices, anything in Atlanta would seem cheap to Amazon.
Interesting possibility. But given the deadline for proposal submissions is in 6 weeks, could that site be properly presented? I still think Assembly in Doraville has a compelling case, but the problem is it’s in a small city without a lot of resources.
Maybe downtown as part of The Stich? http://www.ajc.com/news/local/could-capping-the-downtown-connector-rejuvenate-downtown-atlanta/0r7lr9EqAsekhyV5H63wlI/
Could be a big redevelopment splash for Amazon…
Is the new pizza place in the Emory Commons shopping plaza open? A banner says “Coming Soon…” but someone said they saw people eating in there.
Their website indicates they are open.
From the AJC restaurant blog:
Decatur, Blaze Pizza is hosting a free pizza day event from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today. To cash in on this offer, like Blaze Pizza on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat and you’ll get a free 11-inch pizza with any toppings. That’s it. No purchase necessary.
does anyone know what the construction across from QT on scott/l’ville hwy is for?
Just drove by there and a sign is up saying they are building townhouses, $400K and up. (!)
Wow, interesting. I would have bet money on a huge Racetrack gas station. But I imagine the homeowners just behind there will be relieved.
Racetrack tried. The neighborhood association fought them off.
Darn. Was hoping for Racetrack. Access in and out of QT can be tricky.
thanks, just saw that myself yesterday. woohoo, more housing, just what i needed.
Walked by where Harkin Medical used to be (next to Thumbs Up on Ponce). It now says “Emory Clinic” so the place didn’t sit empty for long….
I’m glad it’s not empty, but that stretch of road creates a buffer between the restaurant businesses on the Square and those on West Ponce. Walking through Decatur on a Friday evening, it’s like walking through no man’s land and the vibe on West Ponce is noticeably diminished. I was hoping to see something that might create a bridge instead of keeping the buffer.
So, schools are closed, UGA is closed, GSU is closed, several workplaces are closed. Curious what folks think: is this just an abundance of caution (which I commmend) or is Armageddon heading our way? The risk of flooding, tornados, and trees topping is something we always have during violent summer storms, right? Is this a lot worse? And will power outages last longer than usual because power crews all headed south to Florida earlier in the week? Just curious what folks think.
Most recent info I’ve seen from the NHC has the chance of prolonged winds over 40mph now down to just 20% or so. Hourly from the Weather Channel indicates a six or eight hour span Monday afternoon with wind in the 35-40mph range which is heavy but short of the truly bad stuff. Otherwise just a windy rainy mess. Are others reading the signs differently?
That’s essentially what I’ve seen. Mostly worried about the sustained winds and all the rain on our trees. :/
some of both, but i would say the difference between a strong storm moving through part of the metro and a strong sustained stormed on all of the metro is probably a big difference in terms of impact to the area.
I understand today, but everything being closed Tuesday as well seems a bit premature.
And we still don’t have power in much of Decatur, especially near Scott & Clairmont. And we will be cleaning up branches for quite some time.
