  1. I know it’s been up for a while now, but anyone know what the deal is with the new flagpole on the east side of the Old Courthouse? Don’t get me wrong, the more flags the better, but I’m just curious as to who put it up, why it is there, etc.

  2. I posted too late on last Friday’s free for all, so posting again here. If someone has time to contact their commissioner, the tennis-playing kids and adults of Dekalb county would appreciate it!

    Fellow Decaturites,

Could you please call Kathie Gannon, our Dekalb Co Commissioner, and complain about lack of water for 2 weeks at Dekalb Tennis Center? Or the Dekalb CEO? Trying to get some noise about the problem. There is some sort of broken pipe.

No ice, no water in the hot summer, no showers, no way to wash your hands, etc. It’s embarrassing to host other tennis teams from functioning counties like Fulton and Cobb, who have working indoor plumbing at their centers.

Thanks, all! Let’s do this for the children…..

  3. anyone know the deal on the halted construction at YDFM? any investigative journalists want to find out? We were so excited about the expansion, but it seems to have died on the vine. permit issues? money issues?

    1. He works on a cash basis and will not borrow money. When he has the cash in hand, the expansion will happen. In the meantime the destroyed urban forest survives.

        1. Ah, the pretension of progress…

I have not been there since they cut down the briarpatch & forest. I hope he goes out of business.

          1. You folks are funny. Glad you hope that many immigrants lose their job. Must be a Trump supporter…

So is there ever a sufficient purpose to cut down trees?

  4. We have a great lineup of bands this year – Get excited about Decatur BBQ Blues & Bluegrass Festival ! Get your tickets here – https://www.freshtix.com/events/decatur-bbq-blues–bluegrass-festival–2017-01-19

  5. It appears the last couple batches of Decatur required trash bags I’ve purchased have been from a bad batch. The draw strings aren’t cut correctly, so they don’t work. I’ve also had a few bags that were so flimsy they rip just lifting them into the garbage can. Anyone else experiencing these problems? This is a recent experience, the past year and a half I’ve lived here they’ve been fine. This has happened with all 3 colors.

    1. We’ve had bad rolls on and off since they came out. We usually buy them at big Kroger. The current roll is OK. We’ve double bagged (regular with CoD bag over it) when the roll was problematic.

    2. We recently had the drawstring issue with a bag of yellow. Not yet into the next bag to know if is still an issue.

  6. I was on some lovely Decatur side streets today, and noticed more of these box type houses–reminds me of a bunch of kids’ blocks piled on top of each other. Is this the new look? First craftsman homes were replaced by mcmansions, then craftsmen on steriods, and now this very square, hard lined buildings among (what’s left of) the lovely craftsmen homes. Is there a particular builder that’s putting these up? 🙁

    1. Boxes with porches. I think they’re terrible. My guess is that they’re cheap to design and build, but they can be sold for lots of money to people who think they need to live in thousands of square feet. I’d feel lost and lonely if I lived in something so garishly huge, but maybe most folks don’t like their other family members as much as I do?

  7. Toco Library – Mason Mill

For the past 2 weeks I have seen what I believe to be a homeless woman, cart will possibly 100+ grocery bags hanging off of it, and a woman on a bench in 90 degree weather wearing a sweatshirt, and a little girl with her, maybe 7 or 8 years old.

Tonight I spoke to her and asked her if she needed anything, and she asked me why I asked her that. I really didn’t have anything to say except “just checking in, have a good night.”

I spoke to the librarians about her and they said they’ve called authorities multiple times. It didn’t really seem “call the police level” but maybe it was. The little girl didn’t appear to be in immediate danger, she was in a dress, dancing, playing, just being a kid. I’m not sure if ripping her away from her mom would be the best, but they clearly need some sort of help if they are not already receiving it. I was prepared to give her the cash I had but she was not interested in speaking with me. I thought about taking them water back tonight because it’s so hot these days, but I’m just not sure what is appropriate here. My thought was continuing to badger may push her into the shadows which would definitely not be good.

I’m going to return next Monday and Tuesday (the only nights they’re open) and see if they are there.

Does anyone know about this family?

  8. I don’t get over to this branch often, so can’t offer additional info about the family. But if you see them again, you might slip the mom contact information for Hagar’s House, the women and children’s shelter in downtown Decatur.
