  1. Question. Is there a city/county ordinance against signs in our yards? We have posted “slow down” and “quiet rail road zone” signs only to find them gone within a few weeks. I can’t imagine anyone being either so irate at or enamored by a “slow down” sign as to steal it?

    1. (Sorry, Irene, I don’t have an answer but a similar question.)
Are there city ordinances about on-street parking (residential areas)? Specifically about having wheels up on the curb, blocking the sidewalk, facing oncoming traffic? There used to be a crazy reality show called “Parking Wars” that showed people getting ticketed for those things. It’s a common sight in parts of Decatur.

      1. Parking on the sidewalk and parking facing traffic are violations. If you see it, call DPD 404-373-6551.

        1. If you’re actually calling THE COPS because a car is parked facing the wrong way, you are a part of the problem. A YUGE part of the problem. Also, the cops hate you.

          1. Agreed. I wouldn’t call the police because of the direction a car is parked. However, I heard a story (urban legend?) about a reckless driver who hit a parked car facing the wrong direction–and both were ticketed.
If someone were to call the police, though, to what Problem would he/she be contributing? I thought the police want to hear from citizens (on the non-emergency line of course).

            1. Can’t speak for J_T but assuming he means the problem of people going to the highest levels of authority as the first course of action rather than reaching out to a neighbor and solving simple problems simply.

            2. At Spring St. near FAVE, there’s parents who frequently park not only facing the wrong way, but with they tires all up on the grass. There’s spots where the grass is dead and gone.

It doesn’t seem like the homeowners there care that I can see, but I’d think that Decatur folks would have the sense not to park like that. It does help to raise awareness by posting on public forums like this, because just because the homeowners aren’t going to do anything, that doesn’t excuse the destruction.

And parking the wrong way during school pickup/drop-off is not safe. Any unpredictable driving is a danger to children–especially themes that ride bikes. And when people do that when it’s dark out, it’s even worser.

              1. The homeowners on Spring Street do care. It’s hugely annoying when people park on both sides of the street for all sorts of FAVE events, not just pick up-drop off. I’ve had my driveway blocked more than once and I always hope that no one on the street has an emergency when the parking craziness is going on since a regular car can barely get through, much less an emergency vehicle. I think the area you are talking about where people park up on the grass is the pocket park belonging to the City. At one point someone tried putting traffic cones out there to prevent the people from getting up on the grass but folks just moved them.

  2. Community-wide yard sale this Saturday April 8, 8a-1p 140 families, many participate.

    Y’all stop by.

  3. At the risk of creating inconvenience for myself, I urge all fans of small, authentic, independent, hole in the wall businesses to get on over to Marlee Street Eatz in East Decatur for some lunch.

One meal per day (plus Jamaican meat pies and some sweets available all the time) announced in the morning via Facebook.

Multiple meals in and yet to experience a dud. Give a small business some love. Follow the daily menu here:

  4. This site has been much less active in the comments section over the past year or so. Everyone move away and the new residents just use Facebook, Twitter, etc. these days or what?(I know it is Spring Break)

    1. Personally, I’ve seen too many people get flamed so I don’t comment nearly as much as I used to.

    2. All blogs seem less active lately. I do think that Facebook has absorbed a lot of the parenting/Mom camaraderie type conversations. But I miss the blogs because they don’t have all that commercial and weird fluffy kitten stuff that Facebook has.

  5. Does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller local bank that you’re happy with? I’m kicking Bank of America to the curb for good.

    1. Private Bank of Decatur or Resurgens are about as local and small as you can get. If you need branches all over town and don’t need commercial services, Delta Community FCU is a good choice.
This question used to be a lot easier to answer about five years ago. Sigh.

    2. I like Georgia’s Own credit union. Open to Dekalb Co residents. Few branches but I use the mobile deposit feature and get cash at the grocery store or CVS machines. I dumped BofA for them too a few years ago, for my checking and savings, and never looked back.

  6. Hey – Has anyone been getting descrepencies between their tax bills and what is showing owed on Decatur’s tax website? As well as having amount owed from previous years ( as far back as 2010 ) popping up on the web site?

    1. I understand from a knowledgeable source that the Decatur tax website has some issues right now.

  7. The father/husband in one of the Syrian families I volunteer with is an expert tailor. He hemmed a few pairs of pants for me, and while I waited, his children showed me clothes he has made. The man is good. We want to help him to get his own business started, but if anyone with any connections has any tailoring they need done, he might could do it just to show how skilled he is. We’ve gotten him professionally machines already, so we’re looking for a space for him to work out of.

I showed him a photo of what I want for DragonCon this year (Ichiya of Blue Pegasus, of course), and he’s like, “No problem.” I would not have him do work to be charitable to him, I’d have him do it because he’s done the best work I’ve seen in the area (no disrespect to my excellent former tailor).

    1. Consider making him a FB page with his contact info? I see requests for good tailors all the time on NextDoor and in my Decatur Mom’s group and would love to point people to his skills.
