Big Tex To Reopen This Fall With Local Support

The AJC reports that Big Tex will reopen this fall around Thanksgiving with support from Decatur City Commissioner Scott Drake, original Big Tex partners Dan and Beau Nolan, and Big Tex General Manager Robin Vaughn.  The Fox Brothers, Jonathan and Justin Fox, are not involved in the relaunch, according to the paper.

Drake told the AJC that the reincarnation will have “a neighborhood bar with really good food—sometimes maybe even great food.”

        1. I’m more of a dry rub guy, myself. But I do mix it up with my sauce on occasion. Let’s do it.

          1. I do dry rub them and they taste good with just that but tossed in buffalo sauce makes them even better, and my sweet onion habanero sauce is off the charts good. Let’s do this!

  1. I’m glad this is happening, but I was always lukewarm on Big Tex. I dined there many times and while I liked it, I never felt they got their menu totally dialed in. I do miss their unique roasted take on creamed corn, but other than that I hope the new owners aren’t afraid to tweak the offerings.

    1. I agree. With a tucked-away location, it was mostly locals and the menu was just too meaty/greasy for my personal taste. So glad to hear about a redux — hopefully with veggie-friendly options!

  2. Agree that they had good but not great menu for most of the duration – Scott nailed that acknowledgement even if it was a tongue in cheek statement – but felt that they were really hitting their stride towards the end so am hoping they pick up where they left off. Welcome back Big Tex.

  3. Very excited about this! Big Tex left a hole in our family’s dining rotation (and I’ve complained about it every time I walked by their sign when there was no restaurant )

  4. They should approach the city/county about somehow leasing the use of that surface lot right across Swanton…it’s always empty at nights and such a waste when it could be generating revenue…I’d much rather park there than a poorly lit and poorly secured parking deck. We just could never find parking anywhere near Big Tex when it was open.

    1. It is actually already free to park in that lot across Swanton at night. They leave the gates up outside regular business hours and you can come and go as you please.

I will be happy to see Big Tex back!

  5. The noise level was often painfully deafening, so I hope they figure out how to reduce it.

  6. Very excited to see this. Even though it’s not really a sports bar, it was a good sports bar alternative to Taco Mac.
