  1. Morning all,

Anyone know what the, “Big Dig” is all about behind The Solarium in Oakhurst? My apologies if I missed an earlier post describing same.

  2. ADULT soccer players needed for a Five-a-Side style pick-up soccer game. Sundays at 4:30PM at Druid Hills Middle School. All ages welcome, but the target range is 25 and up. Sorry no children. For more information text Jerry at 404-377-1679

  3. Still looking for a recommended plumber. I’ve called several who keep referring me to someone else because they don’t work in Decatur. Has anybody had a good experience that you’d care to share?

    1. M. Cary is on the high end of pricing, but if you need someone right away, they often can make it happen. We are happy with Dale Johnson, The Civilized Plumber, 678-458-6188. Dale is always booked up, but prices are great.

      1. I definitely second checking out The Civilized Plumber. He’s always done a fantastic job for us at a very reasonable price.

    2. I recommend Birney Fewell, AKA Birney The Plumber. I’ve used him several times and been very pleased with his work. His cell is 678-908-0486. He’s an independent plumber and a nice guy, originally from Decatur.

    3. 3rd vote for Dale Johnson, the civilized plumber. Has done work for us, big and small, for several years now.

      1. There was a long thread about plumbers on next-door. The short of it was that Dale the civilized plumber gets high marks. The rub is that he is very booked up (I had tried getting an appointment with Dale but was told he wasn’t available). Another of his plumbers seems to get some work. This other plumber of Dale’s did VERY poor work for someone.

    4. Plumbworks. They’re at the higher end of the price range, but they’re usually available within 24 hours. And their work is always top-notch.

  4. Cordele Jackson needs our help. Cordele grew up in Allen Wilson Terrace (aka the OP) and attended Decatur schools from Clairmont through his graduation from DHS in 2013. In addition to being a good student and all around good kid, Cordele was an excellent basketball player at DHS. Since graduation he has spent his time pursuing his education, while also continuing to participate in athletics. Cordele will be attending Letourneau University this fall where he will have the opportunity to work towards finishing a degree in engineering and play basketball. However, after filing for financial aid and connecting with work-study programs, Cordele is about $3000 short of the funding needed to begin this semester.

I have included below the link to a GoFundMe page created Cordele’s mother. It contains more information about Cordele’s situation. I can tell you that as long as I have known Cordele and his mother, they have struggled to make ends meet, but remained positive and hopeful for a better future. I hope some regular DM readers can make a contribution to help one of our own.

    Thank you!

      1. Great job DM faithful! Since Friday you have donated over $1,000. Cordele is only $168 short of his goal of $2,823. Every little bit helps. Please consider joining the cause.

  5. Decatur High School and the DHS JROTC will have a September 11 Remembrance Ceremony TODAY, September 9 at 2:30. The 2:30 ceremony will be in the DHS Performing Arts building. City of Decatur Fire Marshal and Deputy Chief Stephanie Harpring and retired City Schools of Decatur Assistant Superintendent of Technology Mary Farmer will be honored at the ceremony for their service to the City of Decatur that reflected “the virtues of those who, on September 11, 2001, sacrificed their lives so that we can live in peace” (DHS JROTC 9/11 Service Award). Parking is limited so please walk to Decatur High School.

    1. Enjoyed lunch Saturday – short menu due probably to Book Festival. Three of us sat inside. Menu doesn’t tell you that a side salad or fries come with the good burger. “Cup” of chili with corn chips was larger than what I’m used to as a cup, and very good – all meat, with melted cheese on top. Extensive bar. Waitperson said that the dinner menu was larger.

    2. We tried to on Sunday for brunch, but the breakfast-type brunch choices were very limited and we went elsewhere. In truth, the bigger reason we didn’t stick around was that they were blasting Paula Abdul in a nearly empty restaurant on a Sunday morning. Very annoying. If that’s part of the 80’s theme, we won’t be back. We did, however, enjoy a nice dinner that evening at their other place, Calle Latina, which offered the much more soothing (and quieter) sounds of Spanish guitar.

    3. We had dinner there on the second night they were open. High marks all around for the food, so we’ll be back.

The dance-pop music was a minus: It just didn’t seem to fit the NY neighborhood tavern vibe they’re going for.
