Marriott Hotel Proposed Near Scott Boulevard & North Decatur Road Intersection
Decatur Metro | May 18, 2016 | 8:53 amThe Medlock Area Neighborhood Association website reports that they have “received a Rezoning and Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) notice pertaining to lots at the Blackmon Drive and Scott Blvd. intersection.”, which proposes a 5-story Marriott hotel.
MANA states that they have “several concerns about this proposal” and asks the community to “to attend the meeting scheduled for June 1, 2016, 7pm, at the North Decatur Unived Methodist Church, 1523 Church Street.”

To give perspective, here is a street view of where the proposed Marriott would go:

This is in a residential neighborhood, across Scott from the current Fuqua/Sprouts development
Weren’t all the houses on Blackmon bought by the developer and torn down?
The houses on the east side of Scott were torn down for Fuqua/Sprouts development. This proposal is on the west side of Scott in the Medlock Park neighborhood.
Finally something I actually agree with MANA on. They nearly always complain about new developments and COD’s wishes to annex closer to their “territory”, but this is quite clearly a residential neighborhood that would appear to have a very random hotel bumped up against single family homes.
Now if they wanted to build it across the street as potentially part of the Phase 3 Fuqua, I would believe that would be a much more appropriate location.
Would help if the post mentioned it’s for a Residence Inn (which is indeed now under the Marriott umbrella but quite different from an actual full-service Marriott). These are commonly located in residential areas as they’re designed for long-term stays. Quite a different experience from a traditional hotel with a restaurant, conference facilities, etc. Residence Inn locations are much more like a nice apartment building.
It may be like a nice apartment building, but it still requires rezoning from single-family residential to office-institution (O-I) commercial zoning, and the proposed building would be five stories tall. I am familiar with the Residence Inns, but have never seen one on a street of single-family homes.
The Piedmont location backs up to Garden Hills. Indeed, that’s not the same as having on one the same block as single-family homes. If I could update my earlier post to say adjacent to rather than in residential neighborhoods, I would.
