One person’s tax break is another person’s tax increase… (see City of Decatur tax breaks)
Anyone want to take bets on how quickly City of Decatur will try to move on incorporating all these developments into the city tax structure? I am imagining it looks very tempting on their side at this point.
All those apartments, tho . . .
Suburban Plaza is without question, everyone knows that is the main tax component they want.
I don’t think the apartments will be an issue. They will get tax revenue from the developers owning the apartments, most of them are 1 bedroom. Additionally, the retail revenue should improve the tax basis far better than the apartment’s impact to the city schools will have.
Apartments are generally revenue-positive from a tax/expense point of view.
A Tesla dealership across the street from a Whole Foods would be a pretty perfect feather in the cap of New Decatur.
Just imagine their new slogan….
DECATUR, the only place in 500 miles where you can shop at Whole Foods AND buy a Tesla at the same time.
“Decatur, a city of Whole Foods Markets, Tesla Dealerships, and Gourmet Dog Treat Boutiques”
“Decatur, a city that cherry-picks business areas from the county and pi$$es off surrounding neighborhoods.” 🙂
Not completely. Sometimes their cherry-picking is driven by the neighbors themselves. The house we bough 2 years ago is one of only a handful that jut up just above N Decatur rd. Otherwise I would be in Dekalb County unincorporated. It is better than playing the limbo game waiting for Atlanta/LaVista Hills/Tucker to start swallowing up the surrounding area.
Subsidizing a Whole Foods?…Really? Not exactly a food desert…maybe a “Whole Foods Desert”????
Subsidizing retail is almost always a bad idea…just cannibalizes other retail, and shifts tax base to residents of course.
At the rate of all the developments now and coming to the N. Decatur & Church St. area,I think its time to start looking into moving out of the area.As I have a feeling before long our rent will either go up or our complex will be sold to make way for more retail or housing in what looks to become a overcrowded area.
