Tell me again how ~1,000 more residents and increased retail isn’t going to add traffic? We need a long term solution to the traffic in this area as more and more points of interest get added yet our infrastructure has been, at best, stuck in neutral.
Because an expert said it. Duh.
too be fair, he said won’t add major traffic, not won’t add traffic. major traffic is already the case. not sure how many people go through that intersection every day, but it’s way higher than a thousand. i’m not sure what kind of impact the walmart had on traffic, but i think this new development will be on par with that. it was bad before, it’ll be bad after. the only way to insure it doesn’t get worse is to have a moratorium on people moving to the atlanta area, which isn’t happening. it’s better for all of us if the people that do move in move in town rather than in the suburbs.
GDOT has a plan in the works for improved signal phasing at both the 6 Point and Church St/N. Decatur Rd intersections. (The existing panel is maxed out and will be replaced.) It’s scheduled to happen at about the same time that the overall Fuqua development is up and running. Not that folks should expect GDOT to work miracles– after all, they have to take into account how the entire stretch from Stone Mountain to Downtown Atlanta functions. But do know that the folks with GDOT and DeKalb DOT support what we’re all seeking: better traffic flow and improved conditions for other ways of getting around.
They are adding traffic lights on Scott, right?. That’s sort of “increasing traffic” by default, no?
there’s talk of adding one where blackmon used to hit scott from the south side, more or less.
The current three way stop on N Decatur that allows traffic to flow from the Walmart onto that street will eventually turn into a 4-way stop. The road will continue through the currently under construction development and end at another, new, 4-way stop on Scott that will be about 0.25 mile from the current mess that is N Decatur/Scott intersection.
Can anyone say light rail is needed at this point?
A light’s going in on Scott at Blackmon (approved in Phase II). Actually, it’s a major step in improving traffic flow and driver predictability (uh… as much as is possible with metro area drivers!). It’ll also help to slow down the Indy 500 stretch between the 6 Point and DeKalb Ind. intersections.
Boy, has the added N. Decatur light been a huge plus! It’s definitely improved things by eliminating the back-ups from folks waiting to turn left. :0)
The scary thing I have been seeing lately is people simply turning left out of the middle lane. This has happened to me more than once where I am turning left from N Decatur to Scott heading east and sure enough, if they can’t try to sneak in front of the long line of cars they didn’t bother waiting in line with, they will just do a double car left turn.
I have no idea what these special little snowflakes are thinking.
Other equally appropriate headlines:
“Expert believes concrete will beautify area”
“Expert believes cutting down hundreds of trees will improve air quality”
“Expert believes drive-through restaurants will promote a healthy lifestyle”
I think the AJC took some liberties with the use of the word “Expert”. I don’t see any evidence of expertise in traffic engineering: “Davis graduated with a degree in political science from American University and attended the Graduate City Planning program at Georgia Tech” (from Kathie Gannon’s website).
Tell you what: if you can find anyone who knows and cares more about All Things Medline LCI Area related than Davis Fox, I’d sure like to meet ’em! He’s studied every facet of what’s needed for now and in the future to successfully transform this area. There’s no one more focused on getting it right than him!
960 new apartments built adjacent to an ill-conceived 5-way intersection that already backs up significantly during rush hour will not cause additional traffic because there may be two transit stations nearby at some point in the future? Goodness gracious, seriously you are an expert?
Correction, an ill-conceived 6-WAY intersection
Looky here, my rabble rousing friend! Isn’t it at least worth asking how it’s all gonna work before deciding that it won’t? (And why oh why weren’t you at the DHNA meeting?!?)
The Medlock Rd. part of that 6 way intersection coming out of the Walmart and heading north used have little traffic – now it is heavily used and quite difficult to turn left onto Scott. Often only one car per traffic light cycle can make it through. I make it a point when being the first car in the left turn lane to take off quickly just as the light turns and make my left otherwise no one else will be getting through till the next cycle.
