Decatur Whole Foods Location Revealed! Planned For Nalley Dealership Church Street Site

wholefoodsponce

The good folks at the Atlanta Business Chronicle responded to our post earlier today about a potential Whole Foods in Decatur by going out and getting more details on the planned store coming to “Greater Decatur”.

So the big question….WHERE???

Developer S.J. Collins Enterprises is in advanced talks with Whole Foods for a site at North Decatur Road and Church Street, according to several sources familiar with the plans. The organic grocer could take a spot across Church Street from the Tesla Motors showroom.

Are we sure?  Pretty sure…

Jeff Garrison, a partner with S.J. Collins, in a statement said he could not confirm the project. But, he said Decatur is a booming area that would be a good fit for a retail project.

As anyone who reads Decaturish regularly or drives up the Perimeter past the old GM plant site knows, Nalley is consolodating its showrooms up there in the near future.

  1. Well, gosh. It’s not in COD, but close enough! Trader Joe’s can’t be far behind. 😛 (Yeah, I went there. It’s almost de rigueur on DM nowadays whenever anyone mentions grocery stores & Decatur in the same breath.)

    1. Heard they were selling Utz chips and will have a continuing sale on Rolling Rock.

    2. But for those that live within a mile of there, it should offset the ding that Walmart put on their property values.

      1. Seriously??
Have you checked on the prices in the Medlock or Church Street neighborhoods? They have all gone up and continue to go higher.

          1. I read an article recently that said that being close to a Whole Foods location actually DOES raise your property values. Wild, eh?

      2. We live way less than a mile. No one can sell their property in our neighborhood since Walmart was announced and currently (prior to that, there were no issues). Some of the owners gave up and are temporarily renting their properties.

  2. Isn’t there going to be a Sprouts just a block away in the Decatur Crossing development?

    1. It’s just like Home Depot and Lowe’s – they have to be next to each other.

      1. Or Starbucks locating next to an independent coffee shop. I guess it’s the free market equivalent of tic-tac-toe–if you put your X there, you might succeed, so I’ll put my O right next to it, even though that isn’t where I was originally planning to put it.

        1. Proximity leasing is a storied strategy. Those of a certain age might remember the days when Pizza Hut’s (pre-delivery days) strategy was to build stores next to or very near McDonald’s, the idea being that people instinctively head to McDonald’s but, upon seeing a Pizza Hut, might reconsider.

Not sure about now but, for a while, Coldstone Creamery had a similar strategy as it relates to Starbucks, with the assumption that people getting coffee, particularly in the afternoon and evening, would love a little ice cream to go with it.

          1. Yeah, but the Coldstone in downtown Decatur where Little Shop is now didn’t last.

            1. At least according to the reports at the time, Coldstone Decatur closed because the owner chose to do other things, not because the business was unsuccessful.

              1. Agreed, I spokme to Kelly before he closed. The shop was profitable but not enough to justify the effort. He opened another francise somewhere else that had the potential for higher margins.

  3. Not sure Trader Joe’s will be here anytime soon, and given the proximity of the Farmer’s Market, an organic-foods mecca, it might not for a long, long time. Also, a study by the University of Chicago showed that the average effect of living within a mile of a Walmart is actually an increase in property value by as much as 2 percent.

  4. Rainbow Natural Foods, a forty year Decatur independent is just up the road from both of them!

  5. Sigh! I was hoping they might pick a spot south of the railroad tracks. It is so frustrating that they’re picking a place near a Sprouts, the DeKalb farmers market, walmart and the big Kroger. Meanwhile, there is no grocery store close by for those of us who live in Oakhurst. I know this is a first world problem but it would be nice to have a store closer by

    1. The East Lake Publix is about a mile and a half from the center of Oakhurst. How much closer do you need?

    2. At least the Decatur farmers market is moving from downtown to Oakhurst this year on Saturdays.

      1. Is that confirmed? I was told just this week that the Saturday market, like the Wednesday market, would now be on the lawn at Decatur First Baptist. Their website seems to back this up.

      2. I like the Downtown location because it gets me walking around Downtown on Saturday mornings.

  6. With all the problems Whole Foods has such as over pricing for foods, selling at the wrong weight, and just way overpriced everything we certainly don’t need that many grocery stores in this much of a cluster. We have Kroger, Walmart, Sprouts, Publix, Costco is coming and now Whole Foods. We have the Farmer’s Market we don’t need another over priced fresh food grocery – good grief.

  7. Does anyone else fear this will cut into Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market’s business? I certainly hope not…ditto for our little, beloved, in-town Kroger. How ironic that here in Decatur, we are the only ITP city with 2 Walmarts less than 10 minutes apart. What in the heck is happening to our fair Decatur? I can’t decide if it’s good, bad, terrible or amazing. Just please open the Dairy Queen before it’s too late!
We have become Berkley with a personality disorder. I suppose the cat’s out of the bag now. Maybe bowling a strike at Comet lanes will help me let go of the Decatur that was…

    1. When WF opens, go buy an organic apple there, and then go buy an organic apple at YDFM. I bet you they’ll taste about the same, and I’ll also bet the difference in price will make it clear to you why WF poses no threat to YDFM.

  8. I get the excitement. It’s a validation of sorts for our community to get its own Whole Foods. I know that means something to a segment of our population.

As for me, I’m still waiting for that official Costco rumor to drop. That retail news would have the biggest impact on my regular shopping routine (and would also redefine the future of North Dekalb Mall).

      1. Yes, I’ve seen that (and many other rumors to that effect). That’s not official confirmation.

  9. Why not an ALDIs near Decatur?? A cousin of Trader Joe’s and good value for basic shopping.

      1. True, but it’s one of the small format stores and doesn’t have many things that the larger ones do. Ok for essentials, though.

  10. It’s not COD yet…give them time. It will be. Small cities like decatur love to grab up tax $$.

    1. I hope so, if only so the people who live near the development have some control over what’s happening. Right now, I don’t trust the county to look after our best interests, do you? As for your suggestion that Decatur is trying to take money from the county, didn’t the cities in DeKalb recently win a lawsuit because the county was improperly keeping sales receipts from city businesses? Whose trying to grab whose tax $$?
