Ammazza Opening Second Location in Old Twisted Soul Space in Downtown Decatur

ammazza

Eater is reporting that Ammazza, the “hopping Edgewood Avenue pizzeria that turns out some of Atlanta’s favorite Neapolitan-style pie” is opening a second location in the old Twisted Soul space on East Howard Avenue, across from Kimball House.

Eater got a bit more info from co-owner Hugh Connerty…

“For the most part the menu is same,” Connerty said in an email to Eater Atlanta. “The space is a bit smaller and a different layout, so we don’t have room for our big dough room or the real long walk-in that we use as part of our dough-aging process. All that means is we’re going to have to make all of it on Edgewood and cold truck it over there It has big enough walk-ins to store plenty of on-hand inventory, though.”

Eater reports the new location should be open this summer.

  1. I believe AHID should take a bow this morning in recognition of her prophetic, coffee-inspired comments last week. Can’t have too much pizza apparently.

    1. Bowing deeply, although I don’t think I included pizza in my never-too-many-in-Decatur list, did I? I like Sapori’s and Avellini’s both, Fellini’s too although we don’t go there as much now that we don’t have screaming little ‘ins that need lowbrow setting. Unfortunately, we have family members who think home delivery of Papa John’s is the bomb. Probably has to do with not wanting to be seen in public with Mom and Dad.

  2. Sweet Jesus! Another pizza place? Look, guys. I love pizza as much as the next man. But this is getting out of hand.

If this trend continues, I expect that a Chuck E. Cheese is going to go up right next to the new Dekalb Farmers Market.

      1. I am going to go ahead and sort of… disagree with you there. Yeah…. We here at InaTech love Sapori di Napoli! So if you could try to eat there just once, that would be great! M’kay?? Thanks, Pete!

If you haven’t tried their pizza, I wouldn’t make a statement anywhere near that. As a personal reference, when my wife was in labor with our child and was told she could have one last meal before she is put on the hospital only diet, she very quickly stated that she wanted Sapori. I didn’t even have to ask her which pizza she wanted, the place is just that good.

          1. Sapori is not better than Ammazza. You like their pizza better than you like Ammazza’s pizza. Ammazza is not better than Sapori. I happen to prefer the pizza at Ammazza. Nobody is twisting anybody’s arm to go to Ammazza or telling you you can’t go to Sapori anymore.
Cripes, everyone’s a damned food criyic.

            1. You’re wrong. And you want to know what’s better than either of these places? Huh? Well I’ll tell you. It’s the pizza I make on my Egg!

              1. Is there a Decatur Big Green Egg group, maybe on FB? We’re new owners and wonder if experienced BGE users like to mentor beginners.

                1. There are a bunch of BGE facebook groups. I ended up leaving most of them because they were so full of drama. There’s one called Big Green Egg Owners of South Atlanta that’s not bad and where you’re likely to still get some useful info or ideas. I’m still in that one. Check it out.

                2. Google “Big Green Egg Forum” and you will find a few different forums that are very informational.

            2. Why did you single me out when several other people made similar comments about which place they think is better?

              1. there is no reply to all feature, people tend to reply to the last item in a thread. generally nothing personal.

                1. Me: “Sapori is better than Ammazza.”

FM Fats, in response: “Sapori is not better than Ammazza. You like their pizza better than Ammazza.”

Yeah, I can see how that was not directed at me. /s

                  1. i see, FM Fats should have replied to everyone that expressed similar feelings about ammazza if he/she wanted to be fair, not just single out the person with the last comment in the thread. bad Fats! /s

                    1. Sorry I made anyone butthurt. I “singled you out” because it was the first and at the time the only comment I read proclaiming Sapori di Napoli’s pizza to be superior to Ammazza’s.
And Varasano’s is better than both of them.

                      (scurries away)

    1. There was more pizza in Decatur a few years ago. Feast did pizzas. Zucca (the place where Colbeh is) was a pizza place. Oz Pizza on College. Even the wine tasting place did pizzas.

  3. This is like when Goldberg’s opened their new place in Toco Hills, a bialy’s throw from Bagel Palace. I liked Goldberg’s before that, but now I won’t set foot in any of their stores. Viva Sapori di Napoli!

  4. Is it weird that I miss Johnny’s?

Napoli is great….the spicy salami and a Negroni make me happy.

  5. Amazza is better than any pizza place in Decatur. And it will bring a hip vibe to this yuppified city!

    1. The hipsters will stay on Edgewood. The Decatur Ammazza will be crawling with friggin’ toddlers.
