The Alexan 1133 luxury apartments on Commerce Dr. are officially open and giving tours according to their Facebook page.

Their website shows studio, 1 bedroom, and 2 bedroom rental options.  Studios range from 532 to 714 sq. ft. with 6 floor plans available.  There are twelve, yes 12, one bedroom floor plans ranging from 723 to almost 900 sq. ft.  Two Bedroom units come in 9 different configurations, range from 964 to 1554 sq. ft., and are almost entirely 2 bed/2 bath with the exception of one model.

Amenities include the expected clubhouse, fitness center, and a pool – this one is saltwater.  Additionally, there is a rooftop deck with fooseball, outdoor kitchen and casual seating, a “social hub” with Wi-Fi, iMacs, powered individual and communal work spaces, TV’s, billiards, ping pong, shuffleboard, darts, and arcade games, electric car charging stations and a dog spa.

Alexan 1133 is the second large apartment development to open in Decatur after The Place on Ponce last year, with the third development, Arlo, still under construction.

  1. I can’t find the rents on this place anywhere. I feel like they’re going to have to be less than the Place on Ponce or ARLO just because they’re on the worst street and don’t have any immediate retail or food.

But maybe people really value close proximity to Clairemont for commuting north or maybe they’re offering similar pricing but bigger units.

    Dunno.

    1. Alrighty, I’m gonna bite. Scott, are you kidding?? Around a city block or halfway around and across the street to get to retail or eats isn’t immediate enough for you?? And makes it the worst street?? Seems kinda wacky. (Then again, I’m someone who thinks that an easy walk within a mile of home to such amenities makes it an ideal place to live.)

      1. Agreed. Also, if “immediate” here requires that the retail/restaurant be in the same building, then only those 23 or so of the 230+ Place on Ponce apartments qualify. All of the new apartment projects are in great locations, IMO. Not sure how the interiors compare.

      2. I didn’t say the location was bad or unworkable. I said it was the worst of the three projects currently in the works. And that’s mostly because it’s on a five lane arterial with the fastest traffic and the highest traffic counts, which is a common consideration for downtown living. Chris points out the train at the ARLO as well (and the fire station is also there) but, in my experience, people investing in cities will take a periodic annoyance before they’ll take an ongoing one.

Obviously different people have different priorities. People such as yourself who are comfortable with a mile radius to amenities don’t typically pay a premium to be directly above or adjacent to them. But other people do and, for them, yes, there’s a difference between a bar or dry cleaners or restaurants downstairs / across the street and having them on the other side of the block or further. Not a huge difference but, comparatively speaking across the three projects, one that exists nonetheless.

People who want to live downtown suddenly have a lot of choices, so they can be selective about the details. Some will opt for closer, even if the difference seems relatively minor to you or me.

        1. IMO, the Arlo is the worst location of the three because it’s the furthest walk from a store (drug or grocery), plus the proximity to the fire station (train wouldn’t bother me much).

          1. It’s much farther to the Baby Kroger from 300 clock of Ponce than Arlo and a less pleasant walk to boot.
And train noise is louder than the fire station. You’re between two crossings that require train horns.

            1. Much further? Google maps indicates they’re within a tenth of a mile in distance. Regardless, I’d prefer the Place on Ponce and its greater proximity to CVS (and other stuff). Alexan is closer to Baby Kroger too, but I’d still prefer Place on Ponce overall. Didn’t know about the train horns, so that would be another strike against Arlo for me

              1. I still hold to my point about a pleasant walk. N Candler St is a far better walk than Commerce with traffic and cross streets.

        2. Paces did agree to pay for the installation of bike lanes along Commerce from Ponce to Clairemont, following the recommendations of Decatur’s Transportation Plan. I’m not sure if the intention is to restripe Commerce in accordance with all of the plan’s recommendations for this stretch, but if so that would mean a reduction to three lanes of traffic (two northbound from Ponce and one southbound). If that is happening it will obviously have a big impact on the speed of traffic and pedestrian activity.

  2. Hey didn’t you see they have “curated” color schemes and urge us to “curate your life.? That kind of pretentiousness will not come cheap.
Anyway this is not a worse location than being on top of the train tracks.

    1. Not to mention that they are ” by far the best apartments in the area, and maybe even the state.”

    2. I don’t think they’re anywhere near the train tracks – aren’t they across from the old Decatur First Bank? You know, the ones that have taken a whole lane on Commerce for the last year.

  3. Could be good for students @Agnes-Scott or Emory. But it’s going to be expensive regardless.

  4. The exterior trim work is …. not well installed. Take a walk around and look closely at fascia, trim, alignment/level/plumb or lack thereof. I consider that a reflection of attention to detail (or not) by the builder. The purpose of trim is to cover up underlying structural imperfections, not exaggerate them. Any anything I am not impressed with could have been fixed simply by someone taking a little more time (and measurement) during installation — not rocket science or complicated.

Place on Ponce appears much better built in that regard.

No I am not a competitor — I simply live next door and have to stare at it walking my dog every day! If the trim work on a new house was done with that level of quality, I wouldn’t want to live there.
