  1. Mornin’ folks. Can anyone recommend a company to re-glaze a bathtub? Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like a DIY job. Thanks.

      1. We’ve used them a couple of times and been real happy too. Eventually, even reglazing becomes futile and you have to ditch the bathtub…

        1. I’m just curious, on that subject…has any one ever had an old (heavy) bathtub removed from a 2nd floor of an old Decatur home? Is that even possible? Thinking about that for a while in order to update an ancient upstairs bathroom with old tile and tub.

          1. We did. As I recall, they took a sledge hammer up there and smashed it. How, I don’t know, because it was cast iron, but one way or another, it got tossed in the dumpster.

          2. Bob took ours out when we redid our upstairs bathroom, I think he used an angle grinder to saw it into a couple more manageable pieces…

  2. Has anyone eaten at Taziki’s yet? Was thinking about trying it this weekend, but wanted to hear some feedback first. I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.

    1. Not the Decatur location, but the one near Glenridge. No complaints. I enjoyed it, but if you’re looking for an opinion from a food connoisseur, I’m not it. 🙂

    2. Yes, and I can recommend the lemon chicken soup and pita bread. Everyone at the table seemed happy with their food. The staff were super friendly, efficient, and helpful. This is casual but good Greek food, not fine dining. You order at the counter and then your food comes out, kind of like Fresh to Order. I think this is going to be a great family restaurant.

    3. I recommend you go to Chris’ Pizza in Toco Hills. They have great authentic Greek cuisine. Been there since the 80’s. Taziki’s is trying to run them out of business.

      1. I would think that Athen’s Pizza or Andryannis are more threatened by a new Greek place in Downtown Decatur than is Chris’s Pizza House. Chris’s Pizza House may be hindered by its name more than anything else. All these years, I never knew it was a Greek place. At least there’s a clue in Athen’s Pizza’s name that it is Greek.

    4. It was pretty good but not great.
My husband had a lamb gyro and said the meat was very good. Actual lamb rather than the complication of meats that you usually see on a gyro. The Greek salad and lemon chicken soup were pretty good. Dolmas fair. Overall, it doesn’t feel to ” chain- like” even though it is a chain. Kind of expensive.

  3. I live in the townhouses off of Katie Kerr. I need a recommendation for the installation of an awning for my front door. All replies are greatly appreciated.

  4. If anyone is tired of sitting alone in quiet concern over the issue, there is a need for community support for sensible and safe gun solutions by the Georgia Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Gunsense Georgia. Part of Everytown, Moms is easy to find on the web and Facebook.

What does it have to do with Decatur? Well, as gun laws get more permissive I’m afraid people carrying them will get more common. That’s not a good thing for the Decatur I know, love, and call home. And if you have kids considering attending a Georgia college or university, HB 544, aka “Campus Carry,” may be of particular interest.

FYI, I don’t work for Moms and only recently began training with them. This is a very organized, dedicated, and professional group. This ain’t your 60s hippie, liberal, “make love, not war” activism, folks, The opposition is for real, and so is Moms.

    Thanks for your time.

    1. I’m not a gun owner so I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but I don’t see anyone making the case that broader responsible gun ownership is “not a good thing”. Not trying to start a fight, believe me, but I’m not sure why I should support the cause you promote here.

      1. You’re right, G Buck. I don’t see anyone making that argument either and please note that I didn’t. But with the porous system of background checks, law enforcement rendered powerless to do much of anything in response to a call of someone carrying a loaded weapon in public, and the list of places where people can carry a loaded firearm expanding dramatically, I can’t reasonably conclude that a given owner is responsible. So, gun owner or not (and I’m not one either), I definitely have a dog in this fight.

  5. Does anyone have advice regarding property tax appeals to the Board of Equalization? If the initial appeal is declined, is it worth proceeding? Just got word that that is our next step…

    1. Your appeal is being forwarded to the board of equalization where you will wait to hear when it’s scheduled.

      1. Yes, thanks Rsizzle. I understand that, though we do have a few days to signal that we do not want to proceed.

What I’m curious about are any strategies people might commend for appeals in front of the Board. We are new homeowners in Decatur.

        1. To lower your assessment you will have to convince the regular people on the Bd of Equalization that the County’s appraiser overvalued your home. Recent sale prices of comparable homes near you is probably the best data source. You say you are new to Decatur. If you were appraised significantly above what you recently paid it should be a slam dunk. I can tell you people are sometimes successful but I don’t have any stats.

        2. You will need to use sales from 1-1-14 through 12-31-14 for a tax year 15 appeal. You will need several that are lower per square foot than what you are currently assessed at. I’ve been appealing tax assessments since 1994 and half of the battle is appearing before a decent board. Good luck to you.

  6. I think if I have to stop for the light at the bottom of the hill on Dekalb Industrial to wait for exactly zero cross traffic one more time, I’m going to absolutely lose it.

It seems like almost all traffic comes down the hill with the light green only to have it turn red as you approach. For nothing.

I feel like this light is trying to teach me something but I can’t figure out what it is.

    1. If you’re about to lose it because of a traffic light, I might suggest you have too much stress in your life. Try some yoga, a long walk, or just some deep breaths. And now, your screen name has me concerned since a bad German translation could see glockenspiel it as “gun game.”

      1. Hey cmon Keith buddy. I didn’t say what ‘it’ was.

But you are right that I probably have too much stress in my life. I’m thinking of taking up some kind of musical instrument. I’m not sure which one though. Like maybe some kind of percussion instrument. But I like keyboards too. If only there was some kind of instrument that combined the two…

Wow. This weather has everyone so serious…

        1. I just started guitar lessons! Try The Guitar Shed in Kirkwood. Parker will get you up and running.

      1. is there some saying that time is money? I mean, not my time, that comes pretty cheap. I’m thinking of the 15 other cars that all come to a complete stop for … No crossing traffic. Surely someone amongst us 16 cars actually is doing some kind of socially useful task that is being hindered by this light?

If you aggregate this loss to society over the entire year, then this light might be wasting tons of CO2 and perhaps 1/millionth of a cancer cure. If that’s the cost that you are willing to bear for reminding me that I am not on a highway, then I appreciate your (perhaps ill placed) concern for me but want to assure you that my prized ’92 Toyota Corolla is not anywhere near highway speed (nor highway potential). Thus even in the unlikely event that I did think I was on 285, I would be going the same 45 mph that I’m going on Dekalb Industrial.

        1. The societal cost of additional accidents due to routine excessive speeding and tailgating in the area swamps that created by the temporary inconvenience of Decatur Metro’s superdrivers, in my opinion.

        2. Hey Glockenspiel, give the nice folks at DeKalb Traffic Ops a call at (404)297-3947. They’re really good about checking things out within a day or two.

(Weird that I haven’t noticed it always turning red– maybe it’s become my zen place to chill out when running errands! :0)

    2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with ranting about a light that is incorrectly synced with the amount of traffic on a given road. Especially on a “free for all” forum style post. I salute you.

  7. I have a small roof leak (around the fireplace) and could really use a local roofer recommendation asap. Thanks folks.
