  1. Good morning all and merry Xmas! Got a new puppy 2 weeks ago. Almost 3 months old now. Lab. She, well me and I my kids, desperately need her to have her nails/claws/flesh ripping gougers trimmed. Do you dog owners out there take yours to the vet, other groomer, etc? Cost considerations? I’m not confident enough to DIY yet, but maybe after i see a pro do it a few times.

    1. Never had a puppy, just grown dogs, but I can imagine how sharp the claws are! It’s something the groomers normally take care of. Check out The Fur Side on Swanton Way. Daniel is a wonderful person all around and would be happy to help.

        1. I agree. The Fur Side is incredible.

The vein in the nail grows along with the nail, so the longer the nail grows, the more pronounced the vein is, and the more likely an injury is. Translation: get your dog’s nails cut often, and cutting them will be easier and less dangerous. If he/she has transparent nails, you should be able to see the vein and DIY 🙂

    2. Every time the puppy went in to have shots (which seemed like every month for a while), we had the vet trim the nails.

  2. he’s baack. Jacob, Decatur’s official teen pressure washer is back from his first semester at school in RI. He’s raising funds for a MacBook.

Get your holiday pressure-washing done over the next two weeks — make those grimy driveways, cob-webby covered porches, and funky green walkways sparkle.

Yes, his dad is an ad guy. Text or phone Jacob directly: 404-309-9863

  3. Deep Purple is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

All is right with the world.

  4. I would like to express my joy at completing one third of my last working day in 2015!!! Five more hours to go. Thank you, Decatur, for sharing this moment with me.

  5. HOW is it only a WEEK to Christmas??? Where did this year go???? I’m feeling as if I’ve been tossed by a whirlwind all of a sudden…

  6. Of possible interest to a few regulars here… From the National Register of Historic Places (NPS) Facebook page:

Is the Death Star eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places?
This is a question we get here at the National Park Service all the time. To answer this question we need to keep in mind a few things. To start, the Death Star was created a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away. It seems clear that this does meet the 50 year requirement. Does it meet all four criteria: A, B, C, & D? Both the construction of and destruction of the Death Star marked turning points in galactic government/politics and community planning. For significant people: Darth Vader, while the embodiment of evil, was a significant player in the entire galaxy, lesser cases can also be made for the Emperor himself and even Grand Moff Tarkin. Simply stated the Death Star is an architectural marvel, clearly allowing for Criteria C. Although we do not envy the rebel preservation consultant who would try to get the architectural plans for the Death Star. The last one lost their life getting the plans to Princess Leia. A series of unfortunate events led to the destruction of the Death Star which has resulted in some fascinating archeological discoveries on the Forest Moon of Endor, allowing for the Information Potential criteria to be discussed.
All that being said, the biggest obstacle to listing is a lack of a nominating authority. Which jurisdiction owns or administers the Death Star. At this time the U.S. government does not even have diplomatic relations with the Galactic Empire. Which after the disastrous negotiations on Coruscant is quite understandable. Even if you said that NASA could plausibly serve as an FPO, we feel that NASA has been so tied to the Star Trek universe that now trying to say they can serve as FPO for the Death Star lacks credibility. The Star Wars and Star Trek universes have been completely separate up to this point, not to mention that Star Trek takes place in the future, which is a whole can of worms in the preservation field. It is outside the scope of the National Register to join the two universes. (And we probably would not be able to respond during the public comment period to the messages that we favored one universe over the other.) If you think the universes could be melded by altering time and relative dimensions in space, well, now we are clearly in the Whoniverse, which, sadly, is under the direction of the BBC, and thus, not U.S.governance.

  7. Maybe an alternate would be to designate the locations of the chunks of debris (some of which may be very large unless they burned up in the atmosphere) on various moons of Endor as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

    1. That’s assuming you can even visit Endor given the ecological calamity caused by the explosion of the death star so close to Endor’s suface: http://theforce.net/swtc/holocaust.html

  8. Riddle me this if you have 10 construction workers working 6 days a week why does it take 3+ weeks to plant a dozen or so trees and do some landscaping? C’mon Oakhurst streetscape be done already!!! – the answer to the first part of this question is more like 2 workers working 4 hours 3 days a week!

      1. +1. Been using them for a few years on a couple of properties. Easy to schedule, easy to pay online.

  9. Just have to give a shout-out to the Verizon store on W. Ponce–the guys there have always been so helpful, even more than a year after my mega purchase.

  10. How much is the rent in some of these new apartments going up in Decatur? Trying to find out if any are actually affordable for our young folks.

    1. A Place on Ponce I did not find to be affordable… one bedrooms basically started at $1400/month.

      1. I can tell you, as a small-scale landlord, that rent is high just about everywhere inside the perimeter. But prices may soon level off or drop as there are a ton of higher end units coming on the market, probably too many.
