Macy’s At North DeKalb Mall Is Closing
Decatur Metro | December 4, 2015 | 10:45 amI have also heard rumblings of employees telling customers the store is closing as well over the last few days, but Tomorrow’s News Today has confirmed…
As I hinted at in October, the Macy’s at North DeKalb Mall will in fact be closing. Store employees were informed November 30th that the store will close no later than January 30th, 2016. Macy’s announced in September it planned to close as many as 40 locations nationwide by late January, but has yet to publicly identify the stores destined to close.I placed calls to other Macy’s stores mentioned privately as possible closure targets, and each store associate I reached claimed their store had not been informed of any imminent closure. The stores I contacted included those at Greenbriar Mall, South DeKalb Mall, Northlake Mall, Gwinnett Place Mall and The Mall at Stonecrest.
TNT also still stands by his prediction that Costco will take Macy’s place at the soon-to-be redeveloped, open-air concept North DeKalb Mall.

1st Commenter: Sweet, a spot for Trader Joes!
2nd Commenter: Dude, TJ has repeatedly said they aren’t interested in opening in Decatur.
1st Commenter: Nonsense. Surely TJ reads this blog. If we keep asking, they will eventually have to build a store here.
Just went to Macy’s. Cashier says they are closing in Jan. and Costco is coming in.
3rd Commenter: Awesome, what a great location for an REI!
4th Commenter: But there’s an REI on the 85 access road just a few miles away.
3rd Commenter: But that’s so far beyond the moat. Surely REI reads this blog and wants to have a location closer to Decatur.
5th Commenter: What a great location for a very large publick house/tavern.
6th Commenter: They need to put a COSTCO over there
7th Commenter: There’s already one in Dunwoody
3rd Commenter: Didn’t you hear what I just said about the moat?
8th Commenter: This is going to make the schools more crowded isn’t it.
Are you suggesting that Dunwoody is reasonably close to Decatur? Even without traffic, it’s a slog (I should know. I make the trip regularly).
It seems like a good spot for a Costco. The Dunwoody and Brookhaven locations are closer to each other than either are to N. DeKalb Mall.
Nope, I had too much coffee this morning and was just being funny. That drive to Costco is bad. I would like a COSTCO, and my better half dreams of the day she can get paper towels in bulk, crates of wine and cheese platters without having to drive to the ‘Woody.
Hee-hee-hee! You said “…the Woody”!
That’s what my wife always says…”I’m driving to the Woody, be back in a few hours” What’s the big deal?…hey…wait a minute!
9th Commenter: Let’s not discriminate here and assume the only big box TP-in-bulk warehouse that could go there is Costco. How about a Sam’s Club?
They should put a Wal*Mart in there.
*sigh* I still miss Rich’s.
The end of an era. I still call it Rich’s.
I loved Rich’s. The fruitcake cookies were my dad’s favorites. And, I got my ears pierced in their jewelry shop when I was 10 years old. The used a sewing needle and a cork behind my ear. Those were the days!
There are only two reasons I ever visit North DeKalb Mall: Macy’s and the theater. Now there is just one. With the departure of Macy’s I expect the lease prices will be falling into the Big Lots, Family Dollar and thrift store range. It could get very ugly…sort of like the decline of Columbia/Avondale Mall and Suburban Plaza.
Unless this decision was not made in a vacuum. It’s already been reported that Costco wants to move into the Macy’s space but needed them to agree to close.

I suspect the Macy’s decision was totally independent — I’m pretty sure I read recently that they are closing a bunch of stores. But I am hopeful that Costco is interested in monopolizing on this opportunity. It is the one thing that could save the ugly decline predicted by Bob.
I missed this last article about Costco. The disappointment I felt when the rumors from years ago about Costco coming to N.DeKalb is still palpable. I would be thrilled if this happened, and I am pretty certain such a move could serve to start N.DeKalb Mall on the road to recovery. The shopper traffic that Costco generates is huge.
One question: Macy’s is a two story building. Any Costco currently in a two story building? It seems to go against everything I assume about the way their stores are now setup. Maybe they would demolish and rebuild?
How about a huge drug free, gun free, safe playground and activities for kids of all ages.
That sounds awful.
I’m in if it includes this:

I’d be happy with a roller skating rink. Or laser tag. Or even mini golf! They are all scarce ITP, and especially inside our moat.
(my dream venue is a bar w a roller skating rink)
100% with you on the skating rink. That would be pretty great.
Hmmm… Drunk skating. I’d go!
In other news, North Dekalb Mall is still open somehow.
Challenges Games and Comics there does a pretty good business.
Crankier than usual. Will miss Rich’s/Macy’s. Sad day.
Santa at N Dekalb Mall is great! He’s been there close to 30 years.
Was about to post the exact same thing.
