Shop Decatur Small Businesses This Weekend in Decatur! (Even If Amex Isn’t Offering Credit Anymore)
Decatur Metro | November 27, 2015 | 9:45 amSo what if Amercian Express has stopped offering card members a credit for Small Business Saturday? Decatur still has plans to throw down this weekend.
This weekend on Decatur Square, the city will supplement your local shopping with a tent offering the following goodies (according to The Decatur Minute)…
- Free gift wrap (on any locally purchased items)
- Hot chocolate, candy and other goodies
- A chance to win a City of Decatur basket (with gifts from all over town)
- A visit from Santa (Saturday only)
- To turn in your receipts – spend $200 at local shops in Decatur during the month of November and get a $20 gift card to a local restaurant
- Holiday music and other festive things
Also, if you want to peruse local gifts ideas from the comfort of your easy chair, check out the city’s series of #30daysofshopping posts, highlighting holiday offerings at local Decatur businesses.

A couple of details about the “spend $200 at local shops” promotion:
–excludes restaurants
–limit three $20 gift cards per shopper
The restaurant exclusion is listed on page 12 of the November Decatur Focus but not in most of the other copy describing the promotion.
That said, I’ll be shopping downtown Saturday!
I wonder if purchases at the Post Office count? Not getting my hopes up….don’t think this fits the City’s idea of a “local shop”!
Do nail salons count?
I would think yes.
Here’s the text from the November Decatur Focus, page 12::
Shopping Promo
Spend $200 in any city of Decatur shop in November (excludes restaurants) and bring your receipt(s) to the Visitors Center or to the tent on the square during Small Business Saturday and Sunday to receive a $20 local restaurant gift card. Limited to three gift cards per shopper.
Turns out the answer is no, the promotion is for retail sales, not services. Makes sense. But just a heads up for anyone who was thinking of totally up their hair, nail, spa, and yoga expenses for November! 🙂
We exclude restaurants from the purchase requirements to encourage retail shopping but work with our restaurants to give restaurant gift certificate incentives. Most of the restaurant certificates get used after the holidays when restaurant business is slow. Since most people spend more than the value of the certificate, the effort helps boost restaurant sales too.
