  1. I like the article about the independence of Japanese children. I have always encouraged mine to hop on their bikes and disappear, to discover (on their own) everything this area has to offer. My parents did that, and the independence, problem solving skills, self-reliance and knowledge of every corner of the place I grew up in became invaluable.

Decatur is perfect for this. Ignore what you see/hear about crime and all the bad people lurking in shadows to prey on unsuspecting children. Send your kids out alone to explore. Sure, they’ll come back dirty, tired and hungry, but with smiles on their faces and stories to tell.

    1. Whatever the cause of child independence in Japan, allowing a 12 year old to ride the subway alone in this country is like writing your own arrest warrant for child neglect. The recent story of the Meitivs is illustrative.

      1. My wife used to see children that young riding the train to one of the private schools (Woodward, she thinks). I guess they’re not “alone” as there is usually a group of them, but they seem quite independent.

    2. An underpinning (sort of) for 7.62’s excellent point:

  2. Woodward kids have been seen on MARTA as long as I’ve lived in Metro Atlanta. They always seem to be in groups.
