Mayor Pro-Tem Kecia Cunningham Won’t Run for Reelection
Decatur Metro | August 3, 2015 | 7:21 amFrom the AJC…
Decatur Mayor Pro Tem Kecia Cunningham, who’s been on the current city commission longer than anyone except Mayor Jim Baskett, told the AJC Sunday night she will not seek re-election.
Mayor Jim Baskett announced a couple of weeks ago that he also won’t be running for reelection in the fall.
That’s too bad, in my opinion. I like Kecia. I’ve always found her to be smart and accessible in her role as commish. Also a big supporter of the many events that help make this such a great little town.

“Baskett—who’s also announced he won’t run—and Cunningham were the only two commissioners up for re-election this fall. Qualifying for candidates is Aug. 31-Sept. 4, with the election Nov. 3.”
Uh, sorry AJC but no. Scott Drake is also up this fall. Granted I had to go all the way to the city website and click a whole link to confirm that, but still.
I think it’s funny that one of the related posts is “Decatur Turkey Tour Continues”.
That feature is becoming more trouble than it’s worth.
I like it, if only because it’s so completely random.
I have to congratulate Commissioner Cunningham on being lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. All at once. That is quite a feat.
Copy editing snark aside, Kecia has been a great commissioner, a faithful supporter of the Decatur Book Festival, and a good friend.
Jim and Kecia have always remembered who I was and responded to me. Plenty of people around Decatur could say the same thing. It wasn’t because I was important in some way, it was because they respond to the community. We have been very, very lucky to have them.
Agreed. Thanks to both of them for their many years of excellent public service.
+1 Kecia has been a great friend to the festival and to the ONA – thanks for all your service to our community and all the best with your future endeavors…
I really hate this, not only because I like & respect Ms. Cunningham, but because with her exit goes (almost certainly) the last shreds of diversity on the Commission. I wish her all the best for her future endeavors.
Cubalibre, I fear you are right but hope you are wrong.
In any case, the fact that Ms. Cunningham is not running for re-election confirms my assumption that she is too smart to hang around for the crazy stuff in our future as a city. I fear we will see a similar exodus of the, “Old Guard” across-the-board as we see the effects of the new demographic make-up of our fair city. Whether we like it or not, Decatur now receives much more public recognition and scrutiny locally, statewide and even nationally. The sleeper has awoken!
Unfortunate, she was a good commissioner. Since there are now 2 vacant posts, I certainly hope there are a minimum of 2 candidates for each open position, ESPECIALLY the at-large post..
So she won’t be Mayor after all?
