  1. Does anyone know if the Dog Flu outbreak is over yet? There was so much attention placed on warnings and updates and I haven’t seen anything in a while. Will someone give an “all clear” or do the vets and officials just expect us to slowly start ignoring the suggested protocols and forget about it? Is there no such thing as an “all clear” for Dog Flu?

    1. I spoke with my vet recently about this. They indicated there seemed to be a drop in cases; however they also said less and less people were having their dogs tested because 1.) the test was expensive to begin with and 2.) the labs jacked up the price recently.

  2. Early morning runners take heed…
My wife was running last Tuesday in downtown Decatur and when she turned onto Claremont by the courthouse (heading toward B of A), she was greeted by a scraggly young black man with an afro carrying a hunk of concrete.
He headed toward her and hurled the object at her (missed) and then started chasing her down Claremont toward Commerce. My wife ran into traffic and started grabbing door handles hoping that someone would let her in their car. After 2-3 attempts…someone did and gave her a ride home.
Witnesses at the scene called the police and one young man even chased after the guy. We called the police and they came to our house (in about 5 minutes) and were able to update us that he had been apprehended and, because of a bracelet he was wearing, was taken to the VA hospital.
Someone told me his name is Ricky and he is seen frequently around town either panhandling or loitering. He must has mental issues, but could have caused an injury had his aim been better. I’m sure he’s still not at the VA…so heads up if you’re running downtown around dusk/dawn and think about running with a partner.

    1. I was the other runner who was running up to that corner, your wife was running toward me. I called 911. Glad that your wife is fine, she was obviously (and rightfully) shaken. The police were pretty sure the “offender” has mental issues.
And a big thanks to the other witness that came running up to assist and confront the “offender”. All runners – be aware of your surroundings, especially at night/early AM.

    2. Thank you. I have a habit of getting into a zone when I’m running and not focusing on my surroundings as much as I need to. This is a good reminder to get my head out of my a$$.

I’m sorry this happened to her, and relieved she wasn’t physically injured.

    3. My friend gave her a ride home and was wondering what happened next – I will share this.

  3. Does anyone know if the parking garage near the Decatur Square bus station is still free after 6 pm on weekends? We used to always park there for dinner, but it looks like a new mgmt company has assumed responsibility. So we’re reluctant to test it out.

    1. Sorry, which deck are you talking about? The only “bus station” I can think of is the loop off of McDonough with the County deck adjacent and it’s still free after 5 and weekends.

        1. OK, across from the County deck. Can’t help you on that one. Didn’t know it was ever free, but I don’t park in downtown much.

    2. We have parked there on Friday evenings and it was free. A few Sundays ago, we parked there to go to Jeni’s and had to pay $2.
The only time I can tell that it’s free is when the exit gates are up. Otherwise, you are charged.

  4. Any Cricket cell phone users our there with a comment on local coverage? The coverage map looks ok for Decatur in general.

Considering I am dropping 2 calls a day with Tmobile, even if I had the occasional drop, I’d be saving $25 a month and have A LOT more data. I could live with a little spotiness considering that. Just wondering if there are any major issues I should know first.

    1. I switched from T-Mobile to cricket a year ago and am quite happy. TM coverage in Oakhurst was very spotty, cricket, which use the AT&T network, is fine. Better coverage traveling also.
If you are relatively happy with your device and don’t want to commit a lot up front, just get a cricket SIM in your current device to try it out. You can do everything online.

      1. I’m very pleased with Cricket both local and when traveling. My wife is on T-mobile and she’ll be switching to Cricket soon based on my positive experience.

    2. This is great news! I have been looking for a reason to wean myself from tri-weekly yogurt tap trips and this will do it for sure! I doubt the owners will miss me but I always tip every trip in. Anyone who spends their day waiting on hot hungry toddlers all day, and occasionally me, deserves way more than whatever they earn.

    3. Cricket is the prepaid brand for AT&T. It’s not perfect, but the coverage is comparable or superior to Verizon in Atlanta and far superior to TMobile and Sprint. I used to work for AT&T, and moved our service to Cricket to save money, keep the network and skip the customer service and billing headache of their postpaid service.

  5. 15 days and counting!!! We still have some volunteer needs (free t-shirt and entry) sign up here http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/17032910045 and of course tickets on sale https://www.freshtix.com/events/decatur-bbq-blues–bluegrass-festival

  6. DeKalb County has hired a vendor to manage parking in the courthouse deck and also for the lot behind the Maloof building. Not sure what the price will be, but parking will no longer be free after 5:00 p.m. and on weekends.

    1. That’s a biggie in terms of parking availability downtown. I wonder if the new vendor will get rid of the urine smell and improve the lighting. I didn’t love using that lot even when it was free.

    2. I’ve never complained about the parking situation downtown because of that deck. I guess I will start complaining…

    3. I have noticed a number of people parking at the library and they don’t even enter the library.

      1. William, I’ve noticed that too. The library should at least make sure that people parking at their deck have a library card.
And Scott, I don’t think so. You can see a lot of people parking at the library and leaving from the exit towards downtown, not towards the rec center.

    4. It sucks but I understand the need to charge for things like parking. If we are going to give Arthur Blank $12 million to built a sports complex on the site of the current animal shelter that we can’t/won’t afford to fund a replacement for, all that money’s gotta come from somewhere. Amirite?

  7. I have joined the likes of Smalltowngal and others as former Decaturites. We moved to Midtown so my wife can walk to her office. That’s the primary reason (easier train trips to the airport was another). Decatur taxes were not a factor in the decision, though I do believe more attention and resources will be devoted to CSD going forward and that played a small part in our choice.
We will miss Decatur and will of course continue to ride MARTA here for the festivals, Brick Store, Cakes and Ale, etc. This city will always have a large place in our hearts.

    1. Do you know if your house will be getting replaced by the “box with a porch” model, or the “angular concrete and wood” model?

    2. Awww man. There seems to be some sort of correlation between heavy DM commenting and leaving Decatur. Hopefully it’s not causation! Good luck brian! Stick around!

      1. We are hoping to continue that pattern in the next few months, too! But probably not far enough to be beyond the “Metro”.

      2. Thanks DM, and yes Walrus I will continue to add my two cents here from time to time, and will definitely still click on your posts when I see them in the recent column!

  8. Hello all. Just a quick invite to join us for our Saturday wine tasting. We do a tasting almost every Saturday from 3pm – 5pm and it’s free. It’s our way of helping you plan for the next water shortage – boil water, drink wine…or something like that. Have a great weekend. – Manj @ Sherlock’s Decatur

  9. Did anyone here actually do (or know someone that did) the Slide Decatur water slide? Was it fun? Worth the cost?

    1. Two preteens I know managed to get on it 23 times. To say they enjoyed it would be an understatement

    2. An older adult friend who did it said that it’s a good thing that mouth guards are provided. Evidently, sliding the city has a bumper car aspect to it.

  10. Anyone have a suggestion for a place that sells and installs car tires? I’m looking for the best possible price from a non-sketchy dealer. Thanks.

    1. Decatur Pure can help. I got my last set there and was very pleased with the experience.

      1. +1. Did the same thing. Told them what I did and didn’t need in a tire and they gave me a couple of choices at a very competitive price.

      1. + 1 for Kaufman on Church Street great service and good prices, they actually care about doing a good job

    2. Never had a bad experience at Discount Tire on Peachtree near Ashford Dunwoody. Fast service, personable and knowledgeable reps, and very competitive prices.

    3. ANYWHERE BUT KAUFFMAN! Had decent experiences there in the past but new management appears to have taken over a few years ago and our last two experiences there were awful. Last time, I caught them in a flat out lie about a tire repair/replacement. Basically, they did work I did not authorize and then tried to get me to OK and pay for it – at an exorbitant rate no less. Two other places, including the Nissan dealership, confirmed that they clearly lied and tried to rip us off. Won’t go back there again. Use them at your own risk!

      1. Had a similar experience at Kaufman – used to be great, but was not happy with the service in early June, so thanks for these alternative recommendations.

    4. Buy local.

Mobley Tire and Auto service. Location seems sketchy (dead end street near auto scrap), but is an old school auto shop, walking distance to Avondale MARTA. My auto shop recommended them to me for tires and I’ve been going there ever since. They are fast, service is great, and prices are fair — not a deep discount, but not tragically marked up either. I have always been in/out same day.

Located at the end of a dead-end streep off Ponce immediately east of the intersection of Ponce and Sam’s Crossing.

      http://www.mobleytire.com/

      1. +1 on Mobley. As an added bonus you can feel like you are going back in time (at least 30 years) every time you go in. I don’t thing they have changed a thing since when Square Table was Decatur’s only sit down restaurant.

        1. +1. Paneling on the walls … and I would not be surprised if there was a black and white TV with an antenna 🙂

      2. Glad to see Mobley get some love. They’ve done me right the two times I’ve been there. They closed on Saturday, though, and I need them tires by Monday. Discount looks good.

        Thanks, y’all.

  11. Huge Yard Sale- Saturday 8/1 from 8AM-2PM (no early birds)
Back yard between 411&417 Nelson Ferry Rd
Ceiling fans, light fixtures, outdoor furniture, small kitchen appliances, office desk and chair, tires, vacuum, TV, humidifiers, dishes and lots of kitchen items.

    1. Ate there last Saturday. Overall, very good. The star of the show is definitely the sides. At our table we had the meatloaf (glazed bacon around it makes it–otherwise, it’s just meatloaf), pork steak (huge portion and very tasty–a little chewy, but that’s typical of pork steak, so I hear), and the catfish (cooked beautifully, but I personally didn’t really care for the tomato-based sauce it was covered in). The butter beans with dill, the greens and creamed corn, and the mashed (more like creamed) potatoes were all worth the trip alone. There are a couple of ways to order: a la carte or family style. If you have a large group, have 1-2 people order family style, which brings 4 sides (the restaurant’s choice), of which there are enough to share with others. Family style also comes with a kale salad that was delish and choice of dessert (lemon ice box pie was better than the chocolate cake, but could have been a little more chilled).

The only “complaints” I’d have (and these are very likely a result of the fact that this was only their 3rd day open) are that the meatloaf was tepid, as was the pork steak, and the service was very slow. I imagine the temp of the foods could have been a timing thing, so considering how new they are, I’d definitely go back and give them another shot. I think those two things can be easily addressed.

Finally, the cornbread was just about one of the best things I’ve ever had. It had a crunchy exterior all around and a definite smokey flavor that was amazing!

    2. Here are my takeaways from eating there late this week:

      1. Overall, tasty…but we left with some sticker shock and disappointment around available offerings and portion size.

      2. My husband and I typically split meals, so we don’t generally eat a lot. Given the cost, we were expecting the a la carte sides to be 2 or even 3 smaller side portions, but a few of the a la carte sides really only feed 1 maybe 2 (serving dish for our a la carte sides was similar in size to the smaller cup at Jeni’s Ice Cream). Maybe we’ll do the family style ordering next time…or stick to the sides that are a bit larger portion.

      3. If you are going to partake in the ($4 for 4 pieces, if you’re doing the a la carte menu and not family style) cornbread, order it when you sit down. It takes 12 minutes to make + another 5 minutes to arrive to your table. Neither the wait-time, price, or even actual cornbread is listed on the a la carte menu. So when we finally asked our waitress about the bread a few folks around us had, she informed us…and the bread didn’t arrive at our table until the end of our meal. It was tasty, though!

      4. Several items we were looking forward to on the online menu are NOT on the actual menu we received (i.e. the grilled pork steak, dumpling, and country fried steak); but maybe that’s just because this is week one. We were told the country fried steak might be a lunch-item only, though…which seems crazy.

      5. Best items on our table: Meatloaf, fatback-fried corn, cornbread;

      Okay items: mac n’cheese, veggie pancake, fried chicken, chocolate cake (which the waitress oddly described to us as “a Duncan Hines cake” and we then spent the next ten minutes wondering did she mean it was made WITH Duncan Hines or just tasted like it);

Disappointing items: Catfish in low country tomato gravy (it’s more like small catfish covered in a thin tomato spread placed on a giant plate with lots of empty plate real-estate around it), creamed potatoes (nothing special and slightly oily), poundcake (so dry we couldn’t eat it), Hurricane punch (not a hurricane flavor at all).

    3. Spouse and I shared an entree (fried chicken–3 pieces), salad (tomato), side (veggie pancake), and dessert (peach tart). Complimentary cornbread was amazing (I don’t usually like it much). We really liked the fried chicken (crisp and juicy), veggie pancake and tart. Salad was okay. Because we shared everything we walked away full and the price wasn’t bad. Nice atmosphere, decor, and service! We’ll be back. When it is a bit cooler, the big tables on the lawn and the side porch will be nice options. I hope it sticks–great place to bring visitors!

    4. Had a great meal there over the weekend. Fried chicken and meatloaf were both very good, the latter especially so (I’m not typically a meatloaf fan, but this was exceptional). Solid sides and, as others have noted, the cornbread is very good and unique – almost a cross between cornbread and corn pudding. Great service. Some in my party found the noise level challenging. I’ll return.

      1. Yes. I prefer Twisted Soul, but my husband thinks he likes Revival’s fried chicken better. I found Revival’s to be extremely salty.

  12. Parker’s menu has been down for a couple days now, and their blinds were closed. Any significance to those observations?

Also, anyone have intel on what’s going into the tea shop space on E. Ponce (next to McKinney’s)?

  13. I am in need of some business signage, tasteful but eye-catching, that complies with all of CoD sign requirements……any recommendations?

  14. If you haven’t stopped by Splash of Olive on Commerce yet, consider doing so. I’d been meaning to stop in for their first 9 months, and now have visited twice. You can freely taste all their olive oils and vinegars, separately or in combination that they suggest. My salads, roasted veggies and other dishes have become a lot more interesting.

    1. I love the vinegars especially. The honey ginger white balsamic is my favorite for summer.

    2. The tangerine olive oil is divine with grilled fish and veggies (especially grilled sweet potatoes)!

  15. took my baby girl to meet her 3rd grade teacher at Oakhurst yesterday, and took a gander across the street.
    apparently, das bunker ist fertig.

    1. You no likey the new Decatur tornado refuge shelter? You’ll think otherwise when the folks on Mead outlive us all!

      1. if it were mine, I would have lots more windows, but because it doesn’t, I’m heading there the next time Putin goes on a bender

  16. In need of an electrician who can come out tomorrow or Sunday. Water leak pooled in our kitchen ceiling fixture.

Cut the power at the breaker box and took the fixture off the ceiling to dry out, but I don’t mess with wiring.

(The water issue is already resolved)

  17. Hello parents! If you have a 1st through 5th grade boy who’s up for the madcap outdoorsy fun of Cub Scouts, please come meet the good folks of Decatur Pack 134 at a back-to-school pool party next Sunday, Aug. 9th, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Glenlake Pool. More info at http://www.DecaturPack134.org and facebook.com/DecaturPack134.

  18. Anyone know of any Decatur establishment showing the Rousey vs Correia fight Saturday night?

  19. Random FFAF Thoughts On Saturday
    1. Like several commenters, I want to thank the concerned citizen who posted about the early morning attack on a jogger. I’m thankful that the victim escaped with no physical harm. What surprised me was that without FFAF, most of us would not have known anything about it. The city didn’t send out a warning on the Smart network or post anything on the Decatur Minute. The blogs didn’t post a description from Lieutenant Ross and you can be sure that the AJC ran from the story. Such is the power of the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Suspicious behavior has become politicized. More and more, criminals will be portrayed as members of an oppressed group and the police and ordinary citizens who report dubious behavior will be labeled as racists.
In the meantime, we have FFAF, our opportunity to post and make comments on local issues the media is afraid to touch.
    2. I want to give a shout out to one of my favorite local organizations, the Woman’s Clinic of Atlanta, which is located here in Decatur. For those of you who were disgusted by the recent reports of the dismemberment and sale of fetal body parts, the Woman’s Clinic of Atlanta is succeeding in reducing the number of abortions by providing accurate information and health services to those facing a crisis pregnancy. Unlike other organizations, “All Lives Matter” to WCA, especially the most innocent of the human family, the unborn. I am proud this organization is in the City of Decatur and wish them continued success.
    3. After leaving the farmers market on North McDonough this morning, I wandered down to the high school to see if any staff members were working. Sure enough, there were quite a few in the building and one of them let me in. Before leaving, I picked up one of the recent copies of the award winning student publication “Carpe Diem”. One of the articles, a staff editorial, caught my attention. In “The Voice: Black Lives Matter…”, the following quotation ends the description of the Ferguson grand jury’s decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson: “Thanks to racism, another murderer escapes.” What I find disturbing about the quote is that no where in the publication is there any attempt to provide the other side of the story. No student or faculty member is allowed to point out the facts of the Ferguson case that justified the no bill. It doesn’t appear that any member of the staff interviewed our police chief for a different view of the case. It’s as if the opinions of those who support the police don’t matter. You would think that the adults in charge would remind the student editors to present a more balanced view. Heck, even the AJC allows conservative opinion!
I bring this to your attention in light of the upcoming school bond referendum. Why should conservatives like myself and others vote to raise taxes when it is obvious that our schools are promoting liberal causes like the recent ninth grade all day seminar on poverty and the 2012 school wide assembly on climate change? Is anyone else concerned about this?
    4. On a more positive note, I sent DM a picture of the DHS cooling tower, recently moved thirty yards south of the original 1965 location because of the future construction. After taking the picture, I asked a construction worker if they found anything unusual under the structure after it was moved. “Well I wasn’t there but was told that they found a metal lid that when lifted, revealed a staircase leading to a tunnel.”
    Another tunnel at DHS!!!

    1. Man, that is carpet-bomb level trolling!

On a personal note, I’m glad my kid’s teachers get their news from places other than Faux News and Limbaugh.

    2. “Such is the power of the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Suspicious behavior has become politicized.”

Given what immediately preceded it, that second sentence really should get some sort of award.

    3. Having never met him, I appreciate Mr. Billingsley’s generally balanced opinions, (though I certainly don’t agree with his apparent position certain women’s health issues – that issue became politicized generations before suspicious behavior…)

I also appreciate his willingness to speak up and notify the community about how ultra-liberal, anti-police special interests like the “Decatur Community Coalition” continue to bear false witness and not just pressure, but demand, city leadership to create burdensome and unnecessary policies by spreading false and unsubstatiated information that DPD engages in “racial profiling.” Quote from someone who spoke at a recent City Commission meeting: “I had the sad duty to tell (visiting African American law students) that they would LIKELY be racially profiled by Decatur Police. I don’t like doing that but I FELT like I had to do that.” “likely” and “felt like” certainly don’t make things true and certainly shouldn’t guide policy.

Also – Summer’s just about over. Curioius to know: DID any of these law students experience this supposed racial profiling?

    4. In summary: “no, Black Lives Matter are the real racists, abortions should be done in back alleys with coat hangers, young people are too liberal, I miss the 50s, when people knew their places.”

          1. I heard: “the media is scared to describe a victim by race (if black) for fear of being labeled racist, it would be nice if we didn’t kill unborn children, and kid reporters should learn to be balanced in reporting.”

Disclaimer: Not making a comment on whether I agree or disagree with any of the above.

            1. One direct challenge to your interpretation – it was a student editorial, which are allowed to editorialize upon current events.

              1. Fair enough. An editorial is by nature an opinion piece, not news. But I still think the overall lesson is a good one.

          2. Cubalibre, I’ve always credited you with carefully weighing someone’s points, then fiercely countering where you don’t agree. Don’t know if in Chris’ case you’ve written him off for holding different views, but I can say with absolute certainty that you’ve misjudged him as a person. Not that you have to, but I sure wish you’d try to look past his style to get at what he’s trying to say.

(And to Chris- WHAT THE HELL??? This is NOT THE WAY to advocate for things you care about.)

            1. Thanks, Deanne. I try not to pile on responding to posts with which I disagree, especially if other people have pretty much covered what I thought of it. I didn’t read Wacky’s post as a comment on Mr. B as a person (believe it or not, there are some things he’s posted that I found enjoyable and enlightening), but on what he said in his post–the (somewhat succinctly paraphrased) interpretation of which I found to be pretty apt. That being said, sometimes, people and their political/philosophical beliefs can be separated, sometimes they can’t. I don’t know Mr. B well enough to know for certain whether this is true of him, but all I have to go by is what he says. (Isn’t there a verse in the Bible that states: “By their fruits ye shall know them”?) As a person who is not only progressive but mixed-race, I understand that there will generally be no meeting of the minds between myself and Mr. B on either of these issues. I do, however, find the type of incendiary race, religious, and gender-baiting commentary that Mr. B occasionally (here recently, much more often) throws out on this board to be numbing after a while, and am just as likely to shake my head and ignore it as to respond.

                1. Really? If you can’t read back through his first post up there and see what I mean, you’re either being deliberately obtuse, or you’re painfully naïve. On any given post he makes here, there are more remarks in the same vein. I’m not going to engage you in a meaningless back and forth–and it would be meaningless, because you either can’t or won’t see it, and regardless of which it is, neither of us is going to change the other’s outlook. But thanks for playing.

                    1. If it’s a compassionate conversation about those particular issues that you’re seeking, and you feel the Billingsley rant above is your best starting point, then you have your work cut out for you.

              1. ‘When someone shows you who they are believe them; the first time.’ – Maya Angelou.

I have no time for the antics of someone who shows up in a comments thread, posts a screed of that length and tenor while seemingly having no interest in responses to or criticism of his perspective. There are plenty of folks I disagree with around here, but by god at least they *engage* with you.

If he’s going to do the virtual equivalent of leaving lit bags of dog feces on our community doorstep, I am going to call him out on it.

              2. And, if you haven’t noticed, he never responds to anyone who responds to him. He just rolls the grenade out and leaves.

    5. “…our schools are promoting liberal causes like the recent ninth grade all day seminar on poverty…”

Soooo…are you flat-out admitting that conservatives don’t care about poverty? Yikes.

      1. Do you think they discussed how government programs/policies contribute to a cycle of poverty? Now you know what he meant. Good try though.

        1. WTF are you guys even taking about? Everyone knows we started a War on Poverty in the 60’s, and the problem was solved soon thereafter by highly accountable and adequately funded government employees.

          1. Ah, well that must be why Mr. B thought the program unnecessary and troublesome. My bad!

        2. No, because they were talking about poverty, not defrosted Reagan propaganda.

          1. Uh huh. And I’m sure they didn’t discuss what government programs can do to help (liberal propaganda).

  20. i heard a tree branch fell on a power line late yesterday, coldly, cruelly, inhumanely, shutting off power to a thousand residents for several hours.

what can’t this government screw up?

    1. The problem with trees, Rick, is that they’re not accountable. They just grow and thrive and shed limbs and die however they damn well please.

      1. and what do they do all day? nothing—all i ever see them doing is hanging around, slurping up free water handouts, and expecting the good people of this city to pickup after them.

buncha shady slackers if you ask me.

    2. Where is Lyrics Guy when you need him?

“There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas”

“Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
      By hatchet, axe and saw”

  21. Those of you who visited the Decatur cemetery yesterday around 11:00 probably noticed the graveside service taking place in the far eastern section. Over the years, I’ve witnessed a number of cemetery services from a distance so I didn’t expect anything unusual. But this one had at least eight Naval honor guards. From a respectful distance, I took a picture and shared it with DM. Today I returned to find out more about retired Navy pilot and long-time Delta employee Captain John Birchel Barnes. According to many of the online condolences, he was a true legend and a man’s man. Here are a few comments:
“Anything worth doing is worth overdoing” (His motto according one of his friends and co-workers)
“…the end of an era and the passing of another true legend”
    “RIP Skipper”
“You know he’ll make it, cause he always does”
“He was the inspiration for so many happy memories”
“…like a pig looking at a wrist watch”
    “there’s trees in those clouds”
    “Trust Me”
“Anyone who can walk away from a F7U crash and CQ 20 years later flying the A 4 will not have a problem with the “Pearly Gates”
“Capt Carl Cockhammer inspired and entertained us all whether at the NAS or on the ski slopes. He will be missed.”
“When there was talk of night carrier quals and pointed out to John about the seriousness and danger involved, his response was “Well I haven’t landed on a ship in over 20 years and it doesn’t scare me!”

The Decatur cemetery continues to be our Arlington, a final resting place to heroes from the past and those like Captain Barnes. It should always remain, in my opinion, a sacred place.
    Rest In Peace Captain Barnes.
