Your Favorite Brisket and Ribs in Atlanta
Decatur Metro | June 30, 2015 | 10:15 amThe week of 4th of July seems like a perfect time to discuss some of your favorite BBQ options in Atlanta!
Where do you pick up your fall-off-the-bone, melt-in-your-mouth favorites?

The hands down best is done by the crew on North Candler and Barry Streets when they do their neighborhood pig roasts.
That’s supposed to be secret.
Heirloom BBQ makes some of the best brisket I’ve had outside of Texas (between San Antonio and Dallas, I lived there for 13 years). Fox Bros could be a contender, but their brisket is inconsistent. Community’s brisket has been a disappointment each time I’ve had it.
Agreed on Community Q’s brisket; it’s only just ok.
Grand Champion has terrific brisket, cooked Texas-competition style. They’re in Kroq St Market and up in Roswell. Their pork isn’t as good as Community Q’s though.
Fox Bros and Greater Good
Just to piss off FM Fats, my backyard. Duh.
How could I be pissed off by the inevitable?
Greater Good BBQ brisket is the best.
I just love Greater Good’s dry ribs
Good to hear. Never been but anxiously awaiting the new East Kirkhurst location opening this fall.
It’s East Lake, but that’s OK.
Brisket, ughh! Why is it OK to pass off such a cheap, awful cut of meat as good BBQ.
Eye of round is best. I miss the Old Hickory House, but the last remaining one is at least somewhat close to Decatur.
Santa Maria Tri Tip is also very good but no place around here has it.
Tri-tip is great- would love to know if anyone around here serves it in addition to the Sawicki’s tri tip sandwich. It is also hit or miss availability in stores to grill at home. Anyone have success finding this cut regularly anywhere?
Bottom sirloin is easy enough to find but I guess it’s tricky if you want… just the tip. Sorry, but I am in Archer withdrawal.
YDFM usually has tri-tips.
thanks!
Brisket, when done right, is absolutely sublime. It’s just one of the harder cuts to do competently. And making great food out of what are perceived of as “cheap, awful cuts” is exactly what (good) BBQ is all about.
Pig ‘N Chik, located at Emory at the intersection of Clifton and Briarcliff (where Dusty’s used to be) is the best BBQ I’ve had in the Atlanta area, by far. It’s beats the other places both in quality and price.
I miss Dusty’s. Their Brunswick stew was top notch…plus there aren’t too many Carolina style BBQ places in ATL.
Dusty’s, RIP. I’m not aware of any NC-style Q places in Atlanta. Time for a road trip back to Chapel Hill for Allen & Sons vinegary BBQ… with a Cheerwine.
Hey, Stu. Any line on local retailers that carry Cheerwine? For some random reason, it’s suddenly my teenager’s top craving.
Scott, look at Cheerwine dot com/find (hoping to avoid moderation). It says the Kroger at LaVista has cans and bottles, Fred’s at Krog has bottles. Some Publix carry it, so any of them can probably order it.
I can usually find Cheerwine at Decatur area Krogers and Publixes, both regular & diet. Cheerwine expanded their delivery pretty significantly about 10 years ago, so I no longer have to bring back cases when visiting the folks in NC. It’s available all across the South now, not just in NC, but it’s not a Coke or Pepsi product so you may have to look around the pop/soda isle a bit to find it.
The ACE on Scott has cheerwine by the bottle
The Kroger at N. Decatur Rd. and DeKalb Industrial carries multiple varieties of Cheerwine – 2 liter bottles of both regular and diet, 12 packs (cans) of regular and diet PLUS they now carry limited quantities of sugar sweetened Cheerwine in bottles (4 packs). Oh happy day!
I love NC BBQ but never found Allen & Sons to be that great, but I realize I’m in the minority, the place has a lot of fans. About the best NC bbq I’ve ever had is the appetizer at the Horseradish Grill over by Chastain. They may not have it anymore as it’s been 5 years or so since I’ve been there, but that was some good stuff.
