Callaway Building Could Be Torn Down This Year
Decatur Metro | June 25, 2015 | 11:10 amThe AJC is reporting the city is saying that DeKalb County employees will be out of the Callaway Building by November and the building could be demolished by the end of 2015.
However, the paper reports that construction of the large, mixed-use project that will take its place – which has long been rumored to include a grocery store – isn’t like to begin until “late 2016”.
Mixed Use!
Honestly, just not having to look at that derelict anymore would be a nice Christmas present. But excited for what’s coming next as well.
Another “miss” by CoD and CSD. Another “mixed-use” building that we do not need; in a location that DHS could have used.
As a taxpayer, I’m against one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in all of Decatur being exempt from property taxes. If residents, employers and retailers want to come, invest in our city, and help lift the disproportionate tax burden off of single family residences, I say bring ’em on.

Regarding the possibility of a grocery store on the site: according to the posted minutes of the Downtown Development Authority, it appears that plans presented in May did not include space for a grocery tenant, although board members expressed strong support for a “quality food market in the place of a restaurant.” Not sure if there were any updates or changes reported at the June DDA meeting, but it seems as if the retail portion of the mixed use has been scaled back from the initial proposal.
Me: we have a perfectly good grocery store downtown now. I doubt we’d have enough market dollars to sustain two.
Everyone else: yeah but, Whole Trader Joe Foods Oganic Market!!!!
