I enjoyed the Pop Up Market. Great beer deal from 3 Taverns and bargain rice bowls from Makan, but six bucks for a cold supermarket hot dog on a supermarket bun? Oy.
As I was leaving the pop up I found what is probably a charm from a bracelet that features a coin from Pakistan. It’s cool and I imagine its owner might miss it. If, by some chance, the owner of the charm gets the message and would like it back, DM can put you in touch with me.
The event was great – a perfect way to spend a Thursday evening – among friends and neighbors. Thanks to the organizers.
Most likely from one of the Black Sheep Ensemble belly dancers’ costumes (and probably mine… I’m forever shedding coins). We have lots of extras, but thank you!
we called the number listed on the city website to get a recycling bin–no response, no bin delivered as promised. Any suggestions?
We just bought a rolling recycling bin. Our two smaller recycling bins/totes are now just taking up space. Free to good home.
Where did you buy it?
Latham Home Sanitation (the city’s recycling vendor) sells them. $75 (if you use a card) and they’ll deliver it to your house. http://www.decaturga.com/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=17
I went to Ace and probably paid more than I should have. Well, at least I don’t have to deal anymore with those annoying totes with cardboard, cans and plastic falling out all over the ground.
You can get them at Lowes for $65.
i called over 6 months ago to complain about how the recycle guys empty my bins and then THROW them back to the curb. Everyone I buy gets cracked or busted within a few weeks. I ask for new bins, was told I would get them, and have not received any since. I refuse to buy any more bins since the recycle company doesn’t care about them. I just keep adding duct tape and keep using the bins. If you’ve never seen how your bins are treated, I’d recommend you watch on your next recycle pick up day.
Hey Decatur Collective – does anyone have a recommendation for a local house cleaner or cleaning service? Preferably one who uses environmentally responsible cleaning products.
thanks!
Was out to dinner in Decatur on the square last night. About 9:30 the waiter announced “Well, the skateboarders are out”. We looked out to see tall thin muscular black men in their 20’s or 30’s just flying down the street on skateboards. What’s up with that? From the waiter’s reaction, it seemed like it must be a regular thing. Anybody else ever see this?
It’s illegal in that area. Call DPD.
It seems weird to mention the way that they looked. What’s up with that?
I don’t think LOL wants to be alerted to sightings of unattractive skateboarders.
I thought skateboarders were usually middle school or high school kids. Not big strong adults.
I still contend that the city’s outlawing of skateboards and razor scooters in downtown Decatur goes against our big walkability claims. There’s no easier way to get yourself to a MARTA station and hop on a bus/train than by skateboard, roller blades or Razor scooter. Yes, I understand the issues with doing tricks on public property, but that’s covered under destruction of property. And everything else that people that take issue with is covered under reckless endangerment. Here’s my 2014 post on the subject…

+1
Couldn’t agree more.
Another +1.
If you are going to stick to that position, you will have to answer the very strong counter argument of GET OFF MY LAWN!!
Also, won’t someone think of the children? Skating could lead to accidents. SAFETY FIRST!
Breaking: Decatur Metro Advances Radical Proposal to Endanger Children.
If the city were to adopt DM’s proposal, minor elbow and shin abrasions could increase by a staggering amount, sending sales of Band-aids through the roof. DM, just what are your connections to Big Band-Aid?
He pumped all his savings into Doc-in-a-Box futures.
Your comments never fail to make me laugh, Scott. You’re my favorite DM commenter by far!
I suppose that’s more mild than “move somewhere else”. Or maybe it’s the same sentiment?
I like looking at hot, skinny skateboarders. It is a bad ordinance.
I am not sure why it matters if they are black.
It matters, Nellie, it just does. #blackboardersmatter
I think a description is required when one asks, “anyone else see this?”
Skinny is so 2014. This is the year of dad bod
This is my year!
+1 !!
I think it’s weird that you think it’s weird for someone to be descriptive in their writing and I also wonder about your motivation. If the description had been a bunch of fat bearded white guys, I doubt you would have thought it weird.
I think it’s weird that you think it’s weird that I think it’s weird.
Hey all
Anyone know of a good spot to find one of those pine straw guys that will deliver to your house? Always big trailers out in parking lots in Dunwoody/Sandy Springs, but I can’t recall seeing where any of those guys hang out down here in Decatur or environs. While I am psyched Intown has straw back in stock, I need 60+ bales and want to avoid the load/unload if I can…
Thanks in advance
Cummin Landscape Supply & Tool Rental on Memorial Dr.
best prices and service. $3(!) flat delivery fee. http://www.northlakepinestraw.com/
Northlake Pinestraw. I paid around $335 for 60 bales, which included the labor for laying it all down. Great customer service.
Thanks DD and AK guy
Tony at Intown Ace Hardware.
Love Tony and Intown, but I am not convinced he wants to part with, deliver and install his straw stash that he’s been waiting a month to get back into inventory…
Goodbye.
goodbye?
Leaving?
To Jeni’s Ice Cream?
I would be surprised if they re-opened, at least with the same name. Who will eat their ice cream?
Me. I love it enough to risk listeria.
Any of you that weren’t at the Booker T. Jones concert last night are idiots.
Second that. “Don’t Let Me Down”
You must’ve gone to the late show. They didn’t play that one at the early show.
Anyone know of a place that sharpens lawnmower blades?
And serves biscuits and mustard…
+1. I don’t understand how one can have a sausage biscuit without mustard, but I always have to ask.
Are you people carpetbaggin’ Yankees?
Mustard on a biscuit? Why in Mamaw’s name would any one commit such an atrocity? I’ve never even heard of it. Now that I have heard of it, I am troubled. (deeply)
Only if it’s a sausage biscuit.
I am horrified. I am left speechless. MUSTARD ON A BISCUIT is a crime against humanity. Yankee capetbaggers.
SERIOUSLY. I need to go lie down.
Born and raised in the south and I grew up eating mustard on sausage and biscuits. It tastes great! I have also seen people put jelly instead of mustard on them too.
Jelly on a SAUSAGE biscuit? I’ve been okay reading about mustard on a sausage biscuit and I’d be fine with jelly on a regular biscuit. But jelly on a SAUSAGE biscuit? Error message.
I hate biscuits.
Even the soft, fluffy kind?
The softer and fluffier the better. But I’d prefer an English muffin or a bagel. Or even a croissant. You can take boy out of Jersey…
I thought you were a biscuit?
But I will never forgive you for introducing me to the delicious bacon on pimiento cheese. I dream of that bacon.
I know, right? And you didn’t even have the Jack and Coke slushie with it! Just imagine how good they are paired together! You’re welcome!
I am not old enough to drink with you.
I noticed that the Jack and Coke slushies are now Bourbon and Coke slushies. What next? Bourbon and cola slushies?
Cooks Warehouse will do it. You can also contact Jacob Curtis, Kirkwood resident, via the facebook link below. He offer sfree pickup/delivery in the Oakhurst/Kirkwood area of town.

Mower Menders over in Tucker. But there’s probably someplace closer.
Thanks for the suggestion. Mower Menders sharpened it while I waited. Awesome!
The Toco Hills Ace Hardware has sharpened a lawnmower blade for me in the past. If the nuts are rusted tight to the bolts they can help you remove and reinstall the blade too, for a small labor fee.
An odd request, I know, but here goes:
Is there a Candler Park listserv? If so, is anyone here a member or know the contact for the admin?
I need to send a thank you to a resident there who gave me a ride home after a bike accident last week. I don’t know their names, only that they live in CP and drive a Prius.
Thanks!
Contact George Dusenbury, who lives at the Artisan but used to live in Candler Park. You could reach him through the Downtown Neighborhood Association.
All the way at the bottom here: http://candlerpark.org/
Unfortunately, Candler Park and Prius only narrows it down to about 4,000 individuals!

Any recommendations on where to get a cracked iPad screen repaired?
Progressive Repair at 2734 East Ponce (near YDFM) recently fixed my son’s cracked iPad screen for $100, it was ready the next day. Worth going there just to see all the old typewriters and other vintage office equipment.
http://www.progressiverepair.com/ipad-repair.html
+1 for Progressive. Fixed my out-of-warranty printer that did have an extended fix-for-free due to defective printheads, and they knew about it.
Thanks for the recommends – I just dropped it off at Progressive for their $100 iPad screen repair deal. Funny – I’ve driven past there a thousand times and never noticed it, despite the plethora of flashing signage. I also asked about replacing the battery while it was on the operating table, and was told the 4-year-old Apple battery was probably better than any 3rd party battery that might replace it – FWIW.
Progressive was next to Cafe Lily for years, and moved east for the Cafe Lily expansion.
Have you called the nearest Apple Store? I cracked my iPhone and they only charged $100 and it was fast (after making an appointment). I don’t have Apple Care so I was pleasantly surprised. Private shops quoted $200. iPad is bigger though, so if you find somewhere charging $100 then jump on it.
The Apple store at Perimeter told me $150, wondering how long ago you went? Most independent places charge anywhere from 70-100. I got my screen done for $70 but unfortunately i can’t remember the name of the place that did it but it was at Perimeter mall, not at the the Apple store but at a kiosk
Jeni’s found Listeria again and is closed, though they say that any ice cream eaten in the stores while they were open was fine. Sigh. The details are on their FB, Twitter, and webpage….
Thanks for the heads up!
Butter and Cream is open!
yes, but they don’t have any of that delicious Listeria flavor…
Butter and Cream rocks!
In case anyone was wondering, the Golden Pheasant last seen in the neighborhood by North Dekalb mall was flushed out of the bushes at the Little Creek Farm barn this morning. Given the amount of grain that gets spilled around there, the bird seems to be thriving. No photo, unfortunately.
It seems weird to mention the color of the bird. What’s up with that?
I know right?
Can anyone recommend a good, local cobbler? Preferably one with weekend drop off hours? I need new heel taps on about 75% of my heels and new soles on a couple as well.
Check with Sonny’s alterations by N. Dekalb mall. Her husband does shoes and she’s there on Saturdays. She does great alterations too
The shoe repair shop that has a Clairemont address but is really located in the lot behind Parker’s. It’s on the first floor of that parking deck. I believe the parking deck is the one where the murder of the hair stylist occurred. Something like One Town Square?
Across from Andryannis (sp)? If do – great work. I take my dress shoes there for repair. Excellent work.
Thanks AHID. Not sure if my response is what you were looking for but Clairemont Shoe Repair use to be on Clairemont back in the day. It was located in a simple one story brick building that also housed the Miss Georgia ice cream store. I recall that there were two elderly employees, one white and possibly the owner and another a black man. Their aprons were always covered with dark shoe polish. There were also some beautiful old-timey shoe repair machines that were fun to watch. Next door was the Miss Georgia store, one of my favorite places in Decatur as a kid. Great nickel cones and milkshakes. I do not recall any criminal activity taking place but I was just a kid.
Bob’s Shoe Repair. He’s fast and his prices are more than fair.
He saved my favorite pair of shoes all for the tune of $15.
What about my response to the cobbler landed me in moderation? I did mention alterations, but nothing about Caitlyn Jenner
No clue. Strange.
HA! I got moderated too! I guess it WAS that phrase.
Ha! What the hell??
It must have been the phrase “her husband does shoes.”
We are relatively new to town. Was the beach party a free community event? If so, trading it for something as costly to citizens as the water slide is a disappointing move. Many people will not be able to afford to take part in what I thought was supposed to be a fun, community-wide event. Bummer.
Really? No one?
The beach party’s a paid event fundraiser for the Decatur Business Assn. Proceeds pay for the Concerts on the Square and Blue Sky Concert programs. The Slide event will assume the same role.
Ah. Well, I guess it was an even trade then.
Looking for someone to do repairs to a concrete patio. One section has broken off due to underlying erosion and cracking the rock-faced retaining wall. Plus we need a solid retaining wall at the other end of the patio. Any ideas?
