In honor of John leaving Atlanta, we link back to a silly post we wrote in 2009 titled “John Kessler No Longer Allowed To Eat Food”. Best to ya John!

Surprised that no one has commented yet on the two CSD-related articles. They are biggies IMHO.
I will miss John Kessler’s writing. And his humor. Best of luck to him.
Read his latest from Friday, June 5 (“New Brazilian Steak House: Same as it ever was”). Classic Kessler.
Ciao down, John Kessler! We’ll miss you. We were really lucky to have you promoting great food and finding new places for all these years. And lucky to have you as our Decatur neighbor too. The Atlanta dining scene is better thanks to you. Best of luck in Chicago and maybe you can get them to fix that pizza of theirs.
The alcohol sales tax news is great! Hopefully someone will do an estimate of the past amounts due and the City can start a plan to pay those to CSD as well.
Wouldn’t that, at least as it relates to Decatur taxpayers, just be robbing Peter to pay Paul? Like, if the city has to pay CSD retroactively, we’d theoretically pay a bit less in school taxes but a bit more in municipal taxes to fund the back payments. It’s just a wash as far as we’re concerned, right?
It’s a wash only in terms of total undifferentiated dollars. In terms of CSD, it makes a huge difference. I would guess that $300,000 per year covers the salary and benefits/SSI/Medicare of around 3 teachers or 6 paraprofessionals. Now if past payments are truly due, it will be very helpful to CSD but I imagine that a lump sum payment would take a chunk out of the city budget. Maybe it could spread over a few years…?
If anyone’s getting robbed, it’s not Peter. Peter’s been taking money due to Paul for 40 years. Peter owes Paul a considerable sum, no question about it.
Considering how many families alcohol destroys, this is at the very least a morally sound move.
Best Kessler quote ever:
“I don’t want to spot the first douchebag drinking broth here.”
This just made my evening. And I hope to never spot that person, either.
I am happy for the aggressive timeline to hire the new supt and I hope they can keep to it and hire a great new supt.
Based on the crowd that hangs out at this web site, those alcohol taxes should be pretty rich. NOT excluding myself on that.
