Happy Friday! Looking for plumber recommendations for a small repair job. Thanks.
The Civilized Plumber 678-458-6188
+ 1 They’ve done 3 small jobs for me. Great service, always on time and affordable. Only wish I had used them earlier with other major plumbing issues.
Thanks. I’ll give them a try.
Anyone have a good local sports bar recommendation?
We have FINALLY given up on T-Mac, because every time we go it becomes more clear that the T stand for “TERRIBLE”–T-errible service and an increasingly T-errible menu.
The last time we went (on a Tuesday night for goodness sake!) we sat and watched empty tables for almost an hour before deciding to leave without getting seated…. is it just us?
We also gave up on TMac. There is so much potential there- and they just don’t see it
Really miss Big Tex…..
Don’t know where you are coming from in Decatur, but Kirkyard in Downtown Kirkwood is a really short trip for folks south of the tracks. Food is good, and they’ve had a great, lively crowd for a lot of recent events. Very kid friendly as well, if that’s a concern.
Unless somebody is already watching another game on that TV, The Imperial will put on any game you want to see.
Food. Atmosphere. Friends. The Imperial is just hard to beat. Might have to stop by for supper.
Are the “red light” cameras at Clairmont & Scott Blvd active or disabled?
Pretty certain they’ve been offline / gone for quite a while now. I seem to recall a change in state law but can’t remember for sure.
The law didn’t change, but Decatur determined that (a) they were not cost effective and (b) they didn’t significantly impact the accident rates at that intersection.
Hello! Can anyone recommend a good dentist and eye doctor? Thanks!
I have been seeing Dr Dresher in a Colony Square (dentist) for almost 20 years — I highly recommend him and his practice.
I saw Dr Roach at Eye Consultants of Atlanta for about a decade until I had LASIK (done by his partner Dr Hamilton). Highly recommend that practice as well.
We have enjoyed Francis Schafer at Blue Creek dentistry. He was very gentle with my crown and he is super with our kids. He is the same strip mall as the Kinkos/Fed Ex at the corner of Clairmont and N.Decatur. Bonus, he lives near us in Decatur.
We recently started going to Blue Creek Dental based on 1. recommendations from people in the area and 2. their prices for people without dental insurance. They keep trying to have us purchase a deep cleaning, as well as return every 3 months. Our old dentist never recommended a 3 month schedule. Has anyone else had this experience? It kinda feels like they are trying to get more money from us.
We had opposite experiences with Blue Creek. I had been told I needed yet another crown by my former dentist and Dr Shaeffer said no way, looks good. Dear Hubs, who has an aversion to flossing and dentist visits, was told he needed a deep cleaning. Makes sense to me!
Dr. Shaeffer is a third generation dentist and we have always found him to be extremely conservative in his approach to invasive dentistry. We love him. I’ve gone very long time between x-rays and he has always been fine with it.
Thanks for the info! We’ll stick with him for a bit longer. Glad everyone has had good experiences. I figured I was jumping to conclusions!
I highly recommend Dr. Michael Stamboly at Eye Etc. in Little Five Points. I’ve been going to him since moving here (found him through Yelp reviews) and I continue to be very impressed with the time and care he takes during appointments. I haven’t gotten glasses there, but have noticed that his staff who service glasses customers have the same approach.
Totally agree on Dr. Stamboly. So conscientious and thorough. Rochelle, who answers the phones and sets appointments, is also particularly efficient.
I also highly recommend Dr. Marvin Winter for dentistry. Very, very conscientious and thorough and very, very gentle.
Strongly recommend Siegel and Dolt on Buford Highway across from the Latin American Association. Excellent experiences there myself and with my daughter. Friendly and attentive hygienists and dentists.
My family has been going to see Dr. Stein and Dr. Frankle at Decatur Dentist on L’ville Highway just up the hill from Home Depot for a few years now. No one in our family needs a ton of dental work, so I can’t comment on anything beyond the cleanings and the hygiene team. Been really happy with them.
If you need an Optometrist and not an Ophthalmologist, Decatur Eye Care in Oakhurst is where a lot of folks go. For Ophthalmologist, I know some folks who are happy with Dr Steven Leff.
Dr. Kenneth Boxer. He operates out of the LensCrafters at Briarcliff and N. Druid Hills.
He is thorough, very professional active in optometry circles, and up-to-date, can handle disease treatment and management. he has an excellent rapport with patients. As a scientist, I like that he is willing to talk to me in gory detail if I want to. He takes the time to listen and find the prescription that really works.
Yes he is located in a LensCrafters, but his office is a financially separate operation, and there is no pressure to buy glasses there, though the staff are helpful if you want to.
I have been going to him since I moved to Dekalb 16 years ago.
On the eye doctor subject… we really like Dr. Warstadt, who works out of the Lenscrafters at Northlake. Great doctor, good staff, and he has all the latest technology (include the retinal scan so you don’t have to have your eyes dilated — and can have historical images of your retinae).
Thumbs up for Dr Warstadt. My husband and I have both been seeing him for at least ten years and he’s great.
Wow, thanks so much!
I was so proud of our little town last night — DHS graduation represented the best of Decatur. The superintendent, in particular, made a short speech with some moving words. Where else does each graduate shake the hand of every school board member? And so many kids hugged the principal as they crossed the stage! And to see such an incredibly diverse student body all cheering wildly for each other — wow! We are so grateful that our child had the experience of this wonderful high school– I can’t imagine a better social or educational foundation.
I couldn’t agree more. Last night made me glad that I live in Decatur. So proud of all our students, parents, faculty and administration.
This makes me so happy. No kids there yet, but they will be eventually.
Thanks O3. What use to be called the DHS Scribbler has a very nice tribute to four teachers that are leaving this year http://3ten.org/lifestyle/2015/05/29/saying-goodbye/
Charlie Copp had a special way of motivating students and athletes to see beyond their limitations and reach their full potential. I recall one kid as a ninth grade student who was a real problem in all his class, including mine. Coach Copp told me that he had never had a problem with the boy as an athlete and helped me see his potential. The boy did graduate on time and I always thought that it was because Copp, and the boy’s mom, never gave up on him when everyone else did. Carlos Cardoza took the DHS baseball team to new heights this year with a trip to the second round of the state baseball tournament. I was told that there were a lot of tears and hugs for Coach Cardoza at the recent baseball team banquet. Laura Nolan was loved by all and will be greatly missed. I was especially fond of Ms. Nolan. No matter how hard my day was, Ms. Nolan could always make me smile with stories about her wonderful children, her father and of course, her terrific sense of humor. Along with Ms. Riley, she has listen to and help calm down more distraught students than all the psychologists in the metro Atlanta region combined. Coaches Copp and Cardoza and Ms. Nolan will be hard to replace.
Congratulations to the Class of 2015, their parents and all who helped them along the way.
We have given up on T Mac too. It was terrible the last two times we tried it. The service is slow and they don’t seem to care.
Need a recommendation for someone to do a small basement finish please. Framing is complete and bathroom is stubbed.
Sandro Olivera, 678 863 5351. He’s done a couple jobs for me and has done great work, plus is always there when he says he will be. Tell him I sent you!
Try EarthSky (Russell Carnes–404-992-7456). They tackle modest jobs like this and provide good craftsmanship at a reasonable price. I had emergency surgery right after Russ began working on my front entrance and siding, and I was in the hospital almost two weeks. Russ did exactly what he said he would do while I was unavailable and contacted my wife and me whenever there was a decision point. I recommend him highly.
Russ did several renovation (kitchen, laundry room, wood repair behind fireplace) projects in my house years ago. Great job! I recommend him too.
Thank you
A big thank you to all the teachers, staff, administrators, and crossing guards–and anyone else I forgot–for a great year in CSD.
The end of a school year is always bittersweet to me. While I enjoy the lazy days of summer, I miss our “school family”– getting to say hi to friends/parents we really only see at school, chatting with teachers and being kept safe by our crossing guards. We live in a great community! See ya next year Winnona Park family!
Finally, on Monday afternoon, I was actually home when someone dropped 2 (of the dozens in the past) poop bags into my empty, yet to be retrieved, garbage can from the morning’s pick up. It had rained all day, so I heard the loud splash as they hit the bottom. I walked over and asked him if he would please take them out, as they weren’t designated for animal waste. He said, “Excuse me?” I again asked him to remove the bags, trying to explain that the can was left over from the morning pick up, and that all garbage was required to be in special bags. He looked a me, let out a statement of profanity, retrieved the bags, and proceeded to walk to his car parked at the end of the street. Of course, all the while, he was letting me have it with both barrels. In between the profanity, he kept repeating, “Don’t let anybody know where you live, don’t let anybody know where you live.” Sheez….
Yay, Ms. A!!! Unpleasant for you, without a doubt, but probably less so than fishing the bags out and dealing with them yourself would have been. Thank you for standing up for civilized people everywhere against the tyranny of lazy, badly reared slobs.
Anyone have a recommendation for a piano teacher? Already been the classical route. Looking for someone who teaches via contemporary or popular music. Thx.
Try Nick Johns, who gives lessons at Guitar Decatur. nicodemous (at) mac.com. He is also the piano player for a local band, Brother Hawk.
I’ll also add that the Renfroe Capstone (our first) was marvelous. So proud of all the kids, teachers and school community.
for those looking for tree cutting/pruning services: big, jumping up and down recommendation for James Rhynold (678) 429-9168. very good pricing, clear communication, pride in his work, great cleanup . . . everything as promised, and more.
quality gentleman whose family lives in the neighborhood.
Yes, what Rick said. I knew James as a friend first and then an arborist. He’s very good at both! Master’s degree in Environmental Science. Lots of experience in tree service. Man knows and loves his trees! Quality guy and quality work in every way. He can also be reached at [email protected] . (underscore between j and r)
Happy pruning!
