Kale Me Crazy Now Open on West Ponce

kalemecrazy

Here’s some restaurant news that I wasn’t able to share yesterday due to the overwhelming side traffic from Water Slide-aggedon.

Kale Me Crazy opened its doors yesterday along West Ponce de Leon Ave, next to Decatur CD.  The 4p-8p Grand Opening attracted a line out the door, as the shop offered free smoothies to the masses with a coupon in-hand.  (We received a hardcopy version early in the week while dining on a nearby sidewalk.)

While I wasn’t able to make the grand opening, I did stop in this morning and try it out.  (Anything and everything within walking distance of your home must be tried and evaluated.  I’m pretty sure that’s a Decatur ordinance.)

I tired a “Refresh” smoothie – seen above – and I was impressed how they somehow made something that is both sweet and includes kale and celery, quite delicious.  Now that the free smoothie offer has ended, you do need to be willing and able to drop $8 on the beverage. But as of 10am, its sufficed as a filling breakfast for me, so I’m not complaining.

  1. Interesting that there was no visible progress on this place for at least half a year, then the prospect of the drive-through juice place across the street gets floated and two weeks later they’re open for business. Probably just a coincidence…

Anyway, good news. Welcome to the neighborhood and look forward to giving you a try!

  2. An $8 smoothie? And I thought a $5 shake was nuts!

    1. It used to be once a year but now once a week, something or other puts me in mind of “salmon guaranteed not to turn pink in the can.”

  3. This kale trend is out of control. It has gone from being a garnish and corporate window box filler to being the miracle Swiss Army knife of the food world.

I’m waiting for someone to claim that smoking kale will cure death.

    1. I pretty much avoided kale as bitter tasting until Chai Pani’s kale pekoras (fritters) and now I’m sold. I’ve got some kale chips at home though that I haven’t had the courage to open. Still skeptical.

      1. Absolutely love the kale pakoras. Also, I just polished off half a pint of braised kale and sweet potatoes from Community Q. Great stuff. But a kale smoothie sounds gross.

      1. Nothing can redeem beets, but I had an amazing cocktail at Radial a while back that involved kale and other juices. I don’t remember what it was actually called, but I referred to it as swamp water — delicious swamp water that really packed a punch, but the looks were certainly swamp water. So, I’m looking at this DM picture and thinking, “Just add booze…”

      2. I would sample a beetcicle in a heartbeat, but you’d have to pay me to try a smoothie with kale in it. (And I eat kale by the bushel all winter–torn up in lentil soup, sauteed, wilted, mashed in with potatoes, turned into spicy chips.)

    2. All lettuces should remain as intended – delivery devices for bacon and thick, creamy salad dressing.

  4. Kale chips. Tossed kale in olive oil and sea salt and bake for 10 minutes at 350. Only green vegetable my 4 year old asks for.
