The Community Center of South Decatur (CCSD), a non-profit organization with a mission to preserve and maintain the nearly 100 year old Solarium at the Historic Scottish Rite building as a sustainable resource for the use and enjoyment of the Decatur community, is seeking an experienced, local person for the Executive Director position.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of an Associates Degree, experience with Quickbooks, Microsoft Office Suite (including Powerpoint), strong communication/people skills, and is flexible for some evening, weekend and on-call hours.
Responsibilities include:
- Office management (follow up on use requests, maintain files, monthly reporting to Board)
- Maintain Quickbooks accounts & pay bills, submit payroll, work with CCSD Treasurer & CPA
- Manage space rental bookings & sell the space (site tours, client contracts, event coordination)
- Manage free space usage requests
- Oversee building cleaning & maintenance
- Schedule & supervise staff (event facility managers, cleaners, table/chair set up & breakdown)
Position is Part-time, requires a mixture of day, evening, weekend and on-call hours and pays $18/hour.
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language used in the workplace.
- Must be able to read and write to facilitate the communication process.
- Requires good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must possess basic computational ability.
- Must possess basic computer skills.
- Good telephone etiquette.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. occasionally
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally.

Me thinks the job title is a bit inflated for the stated responsibilities.
I don’t know, but it may be the only paid employee, which would probably make the title appropriate.
Yep. In the nonprofit world, the top-level paid staff employee who answers directly to the Board is commonly titled the Executive Director.
Not in my nonprofit world. This is an office manager. Tons of little volunteer orgs have office managers as the only employee.
Without some kind of responsibility for strategy and fundraising in a non-profit, this title still seems inappropriate at least and misleading at worst to future employers. This job description is more correctly a facilities manager in my opinion.
You Keiths do realize that you’re basically sitting back and throwing peanuts at the efforts of the hardworking VOLUNTEER board members who are trying to staff the Solarium? The reality of the non-profit world is that making things work requires personnel who in other contexts might be considered vastly over-qualified for the levels of monetary compensation and professional credit they actually receive. In any case, this particular job (which I happen to be deeply familiar with, having helped invent it over time) includes managing the facility but also much more. It absolutely requires a candidate with executive skills and I wish the CCSD board all the luck in the world in finding a terrific person to fill it.
Fair enough, but the “much more” should be in the description and I don’t consider my comments to be “peanut throwing.” I’m extra sensitive to title’s these days, as I’m also looking for new opportunities. As someone who is looking, I am usually helped by searching for different job descriptions and titles. It doesn’t help me to look for a Manager, Director, or VP role to then find out that it is something less than what is advertised. In fact, it wastes my time. I’m also well aware that in different “worlds” titles can mean different things. A VP title at a bank means something in that world that it may not mean in Manufacturing. My experiences with non-profits have generally been that an Executive Director is involved in strategy development or fundraising to a good degree. This isn’t to say the job the Solarium is trying to fill is not a good and solid job…it looks like it is. It just doesn’t sounds like an ED to me, even in this particular “world.” Maybe small non-profits differ from medium to large non-profits in this regard, if so, I may be mistaken.
I too, hope the board finds the right and a terrific person.
As a nonprofit professional with an MPA in nonprofit management (the MBA of our world), I find the title a little insulting to what we do to try to professionalize our profession and recognize what exactly we do. Sorry if you think that is “throwing peanuts”. Titles mean things and this is not an executive director position. It is not putting down anyone’s work to say the title is not reflective of what non profit professionals in executive director positions actually do in the broader nonprofit world. If anything, conflating an executive director with a facilities/office manager position is a bit insulting.
