Your Favorite Low Alcohol Beers Right Now

let-there-be-light

As the Spring days get warmer, folks are often looking for beers to help with their general hydration levels.

With many new “Session IPAs” out there and the general abundance of lower ABV wheat beers, there’s an overwhelming smorgasbord of options – beyond the Big 3, light beer mega-brands – for people going to the beach or just sitting out on the porch in the afternoon.

What are your favorite low alcohol beers of late?

  1. At 3%, my ultra-low ABV, post-lawncutting, refreshing soury go-to fave is Blue Tarp’s Fünk Weisse, brewed right here in town.

  2. Creature Comforts Athena is very refreshing, and this upcoming pilsner from Wild Heaven sounds great: http://beerstreetjournal.com/wild-heaven-emergency-drinking-beer/

    1. I enjoy Athena as well. Easier to drink than the Westbrook Gose which gets salty after a while.

Osker Blues new Pinner is the best IPA Session I’ve encountered. Also always enjoy Oberon after a winter reprieve.

  3. For me, a low ABV beer would be something like a Dale’s Pale Ale (which I like a lot), but I think that’s about 6%. Of the wheat beers, I like an Ayinger every now and then, but I don’t think it’s very low alcohol either. The Founder’s All Day IPA isn’t bad for a low ABV beer, but it’s not something I would choose normally.

  4. Emergency Drinking Beer will my favorite low ABV beer (4%) starting on Thursday night!

    1. Caught the release last night at Victory and it was indeed a refreshing brew. My only complaint is just how drinkable it is. I downed three before even realizing it. Reliving my younger days.

  5. Westbrook Gose, in a can. My hot summer day beer. 4%. Six packs available at Sherlocks and most good craft beer stores.

An acquired taste – a wheat sour with a hint of coriander and salt … I call it the beer equivalent of Gatorade 🙂

  6. might i suggest you fellers are missing the entire point of the exercise?
maybe you should stick with iced tea.

    1. what’s next, favorite light moisture shower? best lukewarm decaffeinated coffee?
c’mon Decatur, we’re better than this.

      1. Well that’s on DM. So far as I’m concerned, the rest of us rose to this spring break softball challenge with some fine, easy drankin’ brews, as requested. So take it up with management!

        1. per my higher than average ABV nature, my more ornery than necessary tendencies have surfaced.
          again.
maybe a fine, light session beer is in order.
here’s to all y’all preserving what remains of your pre-Spring Break synapses, by any means necessary

  7. I keep waiting for some good low alcohol beer, but it doesn’t seem to really catch on. The New York Times had a piece about low alcohol beer in 2008 that got my hopes up, but I’m still waiting for these yummy 3% beers: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/27/dining/27beer.html?oref=slogin&_r=0

  8. Definitely checking out some of these, esp. the Emergency Drinking Beer. My go-to beer in any season is Guinness Stout:: both low-cal and low alcohol (and so, so tasty).

  9. I’m partial to Terrapin’s Recreationale for session drinking. When my sweetie was pregnant in 1989 she used to like a no alcohol brew by Firestone, the wine people. It was only made for a couple of years and it was the tastiest near beer I’ve ever had.

  10. I tried a number of the session IPA and Terrapin’s Recreation ale is my favorite. I also prefer a couple of Kolschs; Reissdorf and Endless River from Mother Earth Brewing. My low ABV from town is Single Intent from Three Taverns.

  11. Jekyll Southern Session (4.8%), Session Lager (5.1%), Terrapin Recreationale (4.7%). And I’ll probably lose any cred I have by saying my favorite “able to have several and do yard work/lawn mowing” beer is a shandy and they’re usually low abv in the 4-5% range.

  12. It’s a bit expensive, but I LOVE Evil Twin’s Bikini beer (and especially love their Sour Bikini beer when I can find it). You can get Bikini at Ale Yeah, and I think it’s under or around 3% ABV. It’s one of the few beers that has that low of an ABV, is under 100 calories, and still tastes good. Obviously, that’s not for everyone, but for long evenings of summer porch or pool sitting, it’s my beer of choice.

  13. If 5% counts as low alcohol, Cigar City’s Invasion Ale is a nice one I recently tried.
