UPDATED: Highland Bakery Opening Decatur Location at 315 West Ponce

UPDATE: I initially missed that TNT linked to a Redstone lease plan that showed the three new retailers and their location in the building.  From the plan, it looks like Highland Bakery will buildout in the western most retail location (also show in the pic above), Orangetheory would build out the center space and Taziki’s would take the eastern spot.

They are also listed on Redstone’s website.

Tomorrow’s News Today reports that Highland Bakery is one of three new tenants opening in the first floor retail space of “The Place on Ponce” building at 315 West Ponce de Leon Ave.  Decatur would be Highland Bakery’s third sixth Atlanta location.

The site also reports that Orangetheory Fitness and Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe will take the remaining two spots in the building’s retail space.

Additionally, TNT reports that “I Love Juice Bar” is the juice bar looking to open a drive-thru location in the 315 West Ponce office building.  As we reported yesterday, that plan is scheduled to go before the Decatur Planning Commission this month.

We’ve reached out to the 315 folks for confirmation on this report.

    1. Favorite benedicts in all of Atlanta. And favorite french toast (specifically, the peanut butter variety). And favorite shrimp and grits.

      On my block.

(Goes to shop for bigger belt.)

  1. That stretch of W. Ponce — between the Marlay and T. Mac — is already Ground Zero for terrible Decatur traffic, what with the limited parking and so many popular eateries and shops along there. I can’t imagine what it is going to be like once those places open, especially Highland Bakery.

Is there hourly parking at the new deck behind the 315 building?

    1. Yes. The deck contains parking for all 315 retail tenants and I’ve been told it will be free for customers.

    2. I’m so tired of hearing about parking and traffic. Not everyone will drive. We need to get over this traffic/parking talk and focus on other ways to get from point A to B. All of this new activity in downtown Decatur is good. Cities, even small ones like Decatur, should be dense, which means more buildings and less parking. That is how pretty much the rest of the world lives.

      1. I can’t help but wonder if the one’s who complain the most about traffic and parking are the last to find ways not to be a part of the problem themselves.

    3. Traffic is good for retailers. If there was no traffic it would make it hard to support this level of higher-quality retailers in the area. I’m thankful that these spaces are getting filled up so soon by what appear to be top-notch operators. Might your commute from one end of town get extended by a few minutes if you are in a car? Possibly at very select times of the day, but not at all at most times of the day.

I, for one, would rather have a rich selection of retailers but a slightly (30-60 seconds) longer drive, than have empty store fronts and empty parking lots but a super short drive. Further, if you want empty roads to drive on, that would likely mean there is nothing on that road to drive (or walk) to. I’ll look forward to having a choice to walk or drive to these places, and when I’m just passing through I’m thankful to have alternate routes if I want to avoid Ponce.

      1. I heard an interview a while back with a 95 year old Atlanta woman. When they asked her if all the traffic was hard to deal with and whether she hated it, she said something to the effect that having a bunch of traffic is the price you pay for living in a vibrant city with lots of opportunities.

If she can get with the times, the rest of us can.

    4. Like the graffiti on DeKalb Ave used to say:

      “Hate traffic?”

      “You ARE traffic”

  2. So, as mentioned above, I pretty much adore Highland Bakery, and the only limiting factor to us going there more often has been the distance and the crowds. Having it this close is almost scary.

Part of me worries about our longtime favorite breakfast/pastry spot, Pastries-a-Go-Go (who helped cater our wedding, including the cake, many moons ago). But Decatur long ago proved that it has infinite brunch capacity. That plus the added influx of customers in the 315 apartments (not to mention all the others under construction) should be more than enough to offset things. Which is good, because I will still need my regular infusions of Bob’s biscuits & gravy and loaded potatoes.

    1. Pastries-a-Go-Go did our wedding cake, too! And everyone raved over it. So often, wedding cakes are much better to look at than to eat, but that was definitely not the case with ours. Back on topic, I am very excited (and my pants are a little nervous) about HIghland Bakery coming to town. I’m going to be eating LOTS of brunch between that and Pastries!

      1. Same with ours, probably because we went with chocolate mousse — an unconventional choice for a wedding cake, and as it turned out, maybe not the best aesthetic choice for the traditional face smooshing — but people devoured it. We wouldn’t have gotten any beyond those symbolic (and subsequently smashed) first slivers if one of my aunts hadn’t had the foresight to secret some away for us for clandestine consumption on our wedding night…

The takeaway: The chocolate mousse cake at Pastries-a-go-go is where it’s at, y’all.

  3. So, no one is going to comment on the irony of a fitness studio in between two food establishments; one of which is a bakery!

  4. I’m just happy to have another coffee shop option in the AM on weekdays and another breakfast option on weekends. Downtown needs 1-2 more of each.
