UPDATED: Scott Boulevard Has Reopened

UPDATE III: Decatur Police reports that Scott Boulevard has reopened.

UPDATE II: Denessa sends in the pic above and reports Scott will be closed for a while as crews are fixing a power poll.  Denessa says a driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit the pole.  Luckily they walked away from the accident.

UPDATE: Decatur Police doesn’t currently have an estimated time when the intersection will be reopened.

Plan your commutes accordingly folks.  From DPD…

Scott Boulevard is currently closed between Clairemont Avenue and Coventry Road due to a vehicle accident.  Electricity is out in the area due to a damaged pole.

  1. Oh good grief. They just had about 4 in the area an hour ago and now I see a new one. Ridiculous! Pay attention people!!!

  2. Seeing the aftermath on tv. Looks like the car hit the power pole at full speed, or close to it. Good thing no one was standing on that corner.

  3. How long does this have to keep happening before residents start demanding more from CoD and GDOT? Does someone have to get killed before anyone will take notice at how freaking dangerous this road is?!

Apologies in advance for the hystrionics, but I for one am done with GDOT placing the convenience of commuters from Tucker/Stone Mountain over the safety of residents in Decatur and kids at Westchester.

    1. Similar plight playing out in Avondale. They’re developing plans that prioritize walkability, ped and bike safety, civic space and small scale commercial. GDOT just said, “Uh, no” because they’re not interested in reducing throughput in any way.

You’d think the community would get the say in what kind of infrastructure they want, but you’d be wrong.

    2. + a billion but I have yet to see things fixed. Believe it or not, the sidewalks and Westchester turn lane are better than they used to be.

    3. It’s worse than you think. Years ago, there were metal guardrails on each side of Scott between Coventry and Clairemont. The rails provided some separation for the sidewalks, which are used daily by elementary school kids. But DOT required the removal of the safety rails because (and I couldn’t make this stuff up), they might do serious damage to a vehicle if one veered off the road. I think that tells you all you need to know about the mentality at DOT.

      1. Good point. The sidewalks are better cleared and both sides of Scott now but the guard rail is gone. Two steps forward, two steps backward.

  4. What? I thought that helicopter was hovering overhead just to watch me start up the Egg and smoke some wings!

  5. Just ran through downtown and Coventry/N Decatur . If I was commuting, I’d stop and have a beverage and a bite to eat. Downtown and Coventry and all other cut-throughs were completely jammed. Police directing traffic told me they are waiting on a power pole to get delivered. No ETA…
