Grindhouse Killer Burgers Breaks Ground in Decatur

Rick sends in this photo of the soon-to-be former parking lot at 433 North McDonough, as it is redeveloped into a Decatur location for Grindhouse Killer Burgers.

Plans for the location (below) were submitted to the Decatur City Commission back in November, when they sought an exemption to the Pedestrian Area Regulations to keep the two existing curb cuts at the site.

    1. Yes. It’s on-premise consumption, which has no distance requirements from schools as off-premise comsumption uses (package stores, etc.).

      1. Farm Burger has an excellent quinoa veggie burger, ask for it “crispy”. I haven’t tried Grindhouse’s version but looking forward to it.

        1. Ah, I’ll have to try it that way (when someone else orders). The consistency of their patty was the problem for me.

    1. Honest omnivore question: Is a black bean burger synonymous with a veggie burger, or do vegetarians and/or vegans consider them different things? Because even as a meat eater I’m often tempted by and subsequently pleased by black bean burgers, while the “veggie” burgers I’ve tried seem to vary wildly in quality and more often than not are borderline inedible. Don’t really understand why black bean burgers aren’t more widely considered the go-to meatless option.

      1. As a 20+ year vegetarian, I personally use “veggie burger” as a term meaning “the burger-shaped option that is not of animal origin [*may contain eggs or cheese], regardless of the specific ingredients used.” I don’t know if others feel the same, of course.

I spent some time on Yelp and was pleased to see that Grindhouse’s veggie burger gets universal raves and is quinoa/bean based. Can’t wait to try it, the fries, and the milkshakes.

      2. Black bean burgers do tend to be more consistent — largely because Sisco sells a really good one to many restaurants in town — I used to eat them all the time at the Vortex! They also have a consistency that is more familiar to meat eaters. Stay away from veggie burgers that are *not* homemade. The homemade veggie burgers do tend to vary greatly because of radically different ingredients so you just have to ask the waiter if people like them and find the ingredients you tend to like. One of the most unusual and best veggie burgers is at Houstons. Manuals just to have a great one but they have changed burgers and the new one is gross. One last thing — usually black bean burgers are not vegan because they have egg whites for consistency.

        1. This was a very good summary of black bean vs. veggie burgers. If you’re looking for one close to home, Universal Joint has an awesome black bean burger. I’m looking forward to Grindhouse because, well, you can’t have too many burger joints!

      3. Not a vegetarian, but I wouldn’t use them interchangeably. Grindhouse’s “veggie” burger is mainly quinoa.

  1. Hmmm…right next to the Chick Fil-a. I wonder if we’ll see signs/ads of chickens pointing that way and saying “eat more beef.”
