Decatur Active Living’s Cheryl Burnette sends along the details for one of Decatur’s most popular kid events of the year…

Join Decatur Active Living on Saturday, March 7th from 10am until 1pm for the annual Touch-a-Truck Event. This fun community event gives children of all ages an opportunity to touch, explore and see their favorite trucks or equipment on wheels.  The City of Decatur and DeKalb County dump trucks, fire trucks, tractors, police cars and motorcycles and many other types of vehicles will be on display.

Ride Your Bike! We encourage folks to ride their bike to the event to have it registered by the Decatur Police Department. All those who ride their bike to the event will also receive a special bike pin!

Decatur Active Living is celebrating National Nutrition Month at this annual event. National Nutrition Month is a campaign that focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. When you come to Touch-A-Truck, join in the effort by bringing any canned or non-perishable food item. All items will be delivered to DEAM, Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry.

Touch-a-Truck takes place in the Callaway Building Parking lot located at 120 West Trinity Place, Decatur. In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, April 18.

  1. Great idea! My son had a school bus obsession for awhile at age 1 1/2! Maybe it’ll help get families to use school buses vs. cars for school drop-off.

  2. By the way, this is an adorable photo. Besides the adorable people in it, all three of them, it demonstrates how early the male attraction to big vehicles can start. I swear my son started noticing vehicles from his stroller at age 6 weeks. Said “car” before “mama”.

    1. Based on all the money I’ve dropped on car magazines, the hours I’ve spent under the hood of one car or another, and the thousands of car discussions I’ve had with my friends over the years, Touch-a-Truck would have been the holy grail for my 5-year old self.

Events like this are priceless for developing an interest in mechanical things, and are a great entree into the world of “how stuff works.” Both my mom and dad were pretty handy, and they made sure to instill in my brother and me a lifelong curiosity in understanding what makes things go.

In other words, Touch-a-Truck is pretty awesome.
