Best Burgers in Atlanta – Steinbeck’s and Pinewood Make the Cut

Have you seen this?  Probably.  đź™‚

Let me say up front that I realize that folks have been telling me/us about this for months, and I haven’t delivered until now.

Back in January – which was probably November in magazine-speak – Atlanta Magazine put out a list of the 20 best burgers in the city.  Among the list are Decatur burger stalwarts – Steinbeck’s at #8 and Pinewood at #11.  In fact, Steinbeck’s Double-Double Animal Style burger took the front cover, as you can see above.

Here are the burger descriptions for the top Decatur burgers…

Steinbecks

If you like Thousand Island dressing, keep reading. Atlanta’s sauciest burger is tucked away in the quiet corner of Oakhurst, where a heap of lettuce dripping in dressing (they call it Million Island) sits on top of two four-ounce patties. Bigger and messier than the In-N-Out inspiration, it’s the salad-burger hybrid you didn’t know you wanted. $9.50 (burger and fries). 659 East Lake Drive, Decatur

Pinewood

Decatur turned out to be a disappointing zone for burgers—save for this cozy cocktail bar, where strips of lightly cooked bacon complement, not overpower, a ripe tomato, raw onions, and two juicy patties covered with American cheese.

Decatur is a disappointing zone for burgers?  Huh.

Anyway, all in all, it’s a pretty interesting list.  I’d be interested to hear people’s reactions to it, since I’ve only had a few of the burgers that made it to the top of Atlanta Mag’s chart.

…Man, the burger landscape sure has changed since we last discussed the “best burger in Atlanta” way back in 2011.

  1. Well I don;t think it would be a surprise to add Farmburger to the list. To me the Imperial should also be there along with the Marlay.

    1. I’d say, generally speaking, that pretty much every pub in Decatur serves up a decent burger. Thinking Man’s switched to an H&F bun a while back and has been highly scarf-worthy ever since.

      1. “Disappointing zone” indeed. Between Farmburger and all those pubs, I can’t say I’ve had many disappointing Decatur burgers.

  2. Steinbeck’s is a definite favorite.

I’m always surprised that nobody ever mentions how good Twain’s burgers are. Very good–underrated, in my opinion!

  3. Fox Bros. “burger” and Miss Ann’s ghetto burger are the only two in town that I actually order and pay money for. Ann’s for the experience and gloriously decadent indulgence, Fox Bros. because it’s just not something I can easily recreate at home. None of the fancy, schmancy meat patty sandwiches on the Atlanta Magazine list are anything that I can’t easily make at home on my grill with some ground chuck and fixins for a fifth of the restaurant price.

  4. I think Farm Burger has fallen off tbh. Too dense, often cold. Interesting that Yeah Burger is off too.

    1. I still have a fantastic burger from time to time at FB, but I would agree that they’re consistency has taken a hit with their expansion. It’s a little more hit and miss than it used to be.

While on the semi-topic, I used to love the turkey burger at Brick Store, but they messed with their recipe when they re-did the menu, and it’s never been as good. Also, bring back the old pretzels!!

  5. Melton’s has a wonderful burger. Also Chai Pani’s lamb burgers are yummy and different from the usual moo.

    1. Twain’s veggie burger is very good. They’ve really stepped up their food the last couple of years.

  6. Twisted Soul has a mighty fine meatloaf burger. Not a slice of meatloaf, like in a meatloaf sandwich. As best I can tell, they prepare meatloaf ingredients as normal but, rather than cooking them all together in a loaf pan, they shape them into burgers and grill.

However they do it, like Chai Pani’s lamb burgers, they’re a welcomed change-up.

  7. I am going to say upfront that my burgers must be cooked well done and I am aware that this makes me a pain. The only place that always gets it right is The Marlay House. Sadly, I have never been to Steinbeck’s and will now move it to the top of my list.

  8. The best thing about the Pinewood burger is that it is only $5 during happy hour… (or, it used to be…)

  9. I love Decatur. It excels at many things. And it has many tasty burgers. But if you gave me the choice of any burger in Atlanta, it’s going to be Holeman and Finch, hands down.

  10. I know Brockett Pub is not officially in Decatur, however, they have a really good, big hamburger. There are only 5-6 on the menu and all are delicious. As a bonus, on Tuesday, from lunch to closing the burger is 1/2 price (eat in only). It also comes with French fries. The average cost is $4.50. Brockett is located at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Brockett Road. Check it out.
