  1. If I am first today, it’s the first time ever. And I have nothing exciting to say other than there’s some disappointed students in my house this morning.

    1. Very true. We took ours down, but there is no harm in some decoration. Now, candidate yard signs for elections long passed, trash /recycle bins left on the sidewalk well past pick-up day and and old garage sale signs…those are other matters entirely.

    2. I kind of like the all-year Christmas lights look. It’s not real Decaturish but has kind of a Northeast urban feel to it. In our case, we always get our tree and wreaths down in a timely matter because of the deadline for Agnes Scott tree recycling. But otherwise, it seems like so much work to get lights up, why not get a few months more use out of them? Our indoor decorations disappear more slowly and in waves as we clear an area for the next event of the year–birthdays, Valentine’s Day, school projects, spreading out the tax paperwork, etc.

        1. +1

I think this year is the longest it’s gone without rotting. (We usually toss it around Christmas.) Er, at least, without me noticing that it’s rotting. Time to go check the pumpkin…

    3. Maybe I am in the minority, but I enjoy still seeing them and think they’re pretty. I’m fine with them staying up while it’s still cold.

  2. Hey people – I’m selling my house soon and have two questions:

    — any tips on paint recycling centers / vendors? (I know I can dry the cans out myself…)

    — any recommendations on someone to stretch two carpet areas that look a bit wrinkled?

    Thanks!

  3. So yeah, my lawn is covered with leaves, and I haven’t had much time to do anything about it. Any recommendations for a local lawn care service that can take care of it for me? Anything from a full service lawn care company to a high school kid with a rake will do.

    1. My high school senior does lots of yard work around the ‘hood. You may reach him at tatumvintagetrade at gmail dot com. He is still trying to pay for his trip to Ireland next month.

  4. Here’s a question for you literary types:
What do you think about McSweeney’s?
    Discuss, please.

    1. I remember they were mobbed when they came to the book festival a few times. They haven’t re-upped for the last couple of years.

  5. any recommendations for an allergist? bonus points if they’re good with kids.
    thanks in advance.

  6. Butter & Cream are briefly opening back up this weekend only! From their Facebook page:

“Yup! As we thought….we can’t stand it any longer! SO we are going to open our doors for a few days so y’all can come get your fix and check out what we’ve been working on! And you can bet these brown butter blondies with walnuts and house made toffee are gonna be there too! ‪#‎downtowndecatur‬ ‪#‎decaturish‬ ‪#‎decaturga‬ ‪#‎popupweekend‬ ‪#‎icecream‬ ‪#‎homemade‬ ‪#‎keepitindecatur‬ ”

Hours on the graphic with their post: https://www.facebook.com/ButterandCream1/photos/a.581400961956389.1073741828.425398160890004/742066002556550/?type=1&permPage=1

    1. Is Butter and Cream a seasonal business? I haven’t been there yet. If they are then it’s a shame for them. Jenni’s is killing it on the weekends.

            1. It does sound weird, but if they made enough money August-December to close for Jan-Feb, more power to ’em.

  7. If you have a Fitbit, join the Walk Decatur activity group: https://www.fitbit.com/group/22QCL2. We’ll be posting group walks and other opportunities to get in your steps.

    1. Also look into the Decatur Active Living Walk With a Doc that takes place every Wednesday morning.

It’s also been in the Focus and on their Facebook page.

  8. What’s the big construction project up Church St up from Nalley Nissan? Something pretty major in the proposed annexation area.

    1. There’s potential for 500 kids to live there someday. Atlantic Realty Partners and the owner of Patel Plaza had a conversation awhile back on possibly teaming up to build a shared parking deck. It’d allow for Patel Plaza to expand and for additional apartments to be built.

    2. Hyperbole? If you honestly think only 750 extra kids will be living in Area B, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell you. This development will bring the total number of apartment complexes in Area B to 6 or 7.

I don’t buy the narrative that annexing more land will solve the school overcrowding issue. It’s like saying adding more lanes to 400 will solve traffic problems-if you annex it, they will come (for the schools).

  9. MONDAY is the last day of the Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project. We have a lot of important repairs of our senior citizens’ homes that we would like to complete. We have a shortage of carpenters and skilled volunteers. We would love your help! If you’re available or know someone who is, the volunteer shifts are 9am to 1pm and 1pm to 5pm. Volunteers meet at the Solarium, 321 W. Hill St. in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur (30030). We’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner available. Information about the Project is available at http://www.mlkserviceproject.com. Call Lee Ann Harvey at 770-652-8593 or email [email protected].

Thank you for being a Decatur Volunteer!

  10. Question for Gold Dome junkies: Isn’t there a date whereby, if a proposal hasn’t made it out of committee (say, for example, annexation or beer sales), it’s effectively dead for the year? When is that?

    1. I think that if a measure hasn’t been passed by at least one house by the 30th day (crossover day), it’s dead for the session. Now, that doesn’t mean another measure can’t be amended to include some or all of the dead measure if it’s considered germane by a pretty braod definition.

  11. Has there been any discussion of this Kevin Gillespie restaurant to replace Harbour Bar?

If it happens, Downtown South’s gonna become known for a whole lotta good southern eatin’. (I’m a fan of Twisted Soul so, you know…)
