You Can Still Volunteer for Decatur’s MLK Service Project

Decatur’s Lee Ann Harvey sent out this note earlier today with details on how to sign up for this year’s Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project…

Sign up to volunteer for the 13th annual Decatur Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project on the weekend of January 17-19. Volunteers will work on senior citizens’ homes in Decatur, making greatly needed repairs, weatherization, and doing yard work that the elderly homeowners have been unable to afford. There are volunteer opportunities available for skilled, unskilled and everyone in between. Volunteers who are comfortable with carpentry or with doing repairs at their own homes are especially crucial.

There are several other positions available, including transporting Materials from Edgewood Lowes (truck necessary), Gutter cleaning (truck helpful), organizing Tools, and Volunteer Check In. We would love more volunteers who can help with Materials transport! There are also opportunities to help with set up on Friday afternoon the 16th.

Volunteers may sign up to work one or more of the following shifts:

  • Saturday, January 17: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 18: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Monday, January 19: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Volunteers will meet at the Solarium at the Community Center of South Decatur, 321 W. Hill St., in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur (30030).

The Food Committee would also appreciate help feeding hundreds of hungry volunteers each day! They are planning breakfast, lunch and snacks for volunteers on Saturday and Monday, plus snacks on Sunday.  Breakfasts are covered but we would love more lunch donations, especially sandwiches. Individuals or groups are invited to make a minimum of 2 dozen sandwiches, cookies, or brownies that are wrapped in individual servings (please label with the type of sandwich, for example, veggie, pimento cheese, turkey, etc.). This is a fun activity for any neighborhood, social or civic group.  To provide food, please contact Food Committee Co-Chair Sandy Rice at [email protected].

Additional information is available at www.mlkserviceproject.com. Contact Lee Ann Harvey at [email protected] or 678-553-6548 or 770-652-8593 to sign up. Please provide your name, position requested, and shift(s) requested. Thank you for caring about Decatur’s senior citizens and helping them to live safely, comfortably, and affordably in their homes.
