Your Favorite Movies of 2014

Did you do your patriotic duty and go see “The Interview” on Christmas Day?  Find yourself going through a late 1940’s film noir phase earlier this year?  Caved to the critics and went and saw Richard Linklater’s Boyhood?  Finally watched the Godfather?

They all qualify!

What were your favorite films of 2014?

  1. Baby Bad Example made theaters tough but there was some Netflix time. I discovered the Station Agent and loved it.

    1. The Station Agent is one of my favorite all-time underappreciated movies. 9 times out of town when I mention it to someone, I get a “Huh?” The tenth person usually says “Oh yeah, I’ve heard about it because Peter Dinkleage was in it before Game of Thrones!” Even they usually haven’t seen it, though…

  2. Saw almost nothing in theaters this year, except for my top pick.

Boyhood (doesn’t match the hype, but a deeply moving film nonetheless)
    Under the Skin (apt title)
Only Lovers Left Alive (great title)
    Ida
    Snowpiercer
    The Obvious Child
    The Immigrant
    Chef
    Grand Budapest Hotel

Most Disappointing: Birdman, just didn’t work for me.

Worst I Saw: Monuments Men (interesting true story deserved better than this dull Hollywood version)

Favorite Older Movie I Saw for the First Time: Birth (2004).

  3. Can we start a list of Worst Movies of 2014? If so, Unbroken would be on the top of it. I hope I can save one person from wasting your money. I had such high hopes for it, because a) the book was fabulous and b) the promise by Ms. Jolie to do Mr. Zamporini’s story justice. But no.
Regarding the Best, I totally agree with Brianc’s list.

  4. Haven’t seen Unbroken, but from what you and others have said, it’s further proof (along with Monuments Men) that an inspiring true story does not necessarily equal a good movie.

  5. Guardians of the Galaxy was probably the most entertaining movie I saw this year. The Grand Budapest Hotel was my favorite of the year, because I love Wes Anderson films and this was quintessential Wes Anderson.

  6. I’m a film geek from Chicago — so, it goes without saying that I loved the Roger Ebert bio “Life Itself.” Profoundly moving experience.

Showing for free on CNN at 9pm on sunday

  7. Thanks for reminding me of this. Roger Ebert was the first critic of any kind I ever read, back in the mid 80s. Didn’t care for him on TV, but came to appreciate his writing. BTW, if you’re a fan of Leonard Maltin’s movie guide, the current edition on the shelves is the last that will be published. A great resource pre-Internet, and still a fun way to look up old movies with a concise description/opinion.

  8. We Are The Best! was the best time I had at a movie in 2014. Swedish middle school girls form a punk band. Hata Sport is a regular anthem at my house now.
