  1. Good morning, y’all! I hope everyone is having a great holiday season! Any leads on a Decatur restaurant that will be open and serving traditional New Year’s fare on Jan 1? Our holiday gift to our next-door neighbors each year is that we take them out for New Year’s lunch. We’ve done the Collonade, but I’d really like to stay closer to home, if possible. Thanks!

    1. Thinking Man serves the mandatory peas and greens, and they make them tasty to boot. Highly recommended by the Bad Example household.

  2. Good morning! So, I got a Keurig for Christmas and I’m investigating ways to recycle the cups. According to this website https://www.recycleacup.com/faqs/ the cups are made of #5-#7 plastic. The city’s recycling info says that Latham will collect plastics #1-#7, but it is supposed to be labeled with a number. The k-cups are not. Does anyone here actually separate the foil and grounds from the cups and put the cups in their bins for curbside pickup?

    1. Here are some reusable k-cups: http://www.amazon.com/Keurig-K-Cup-Reusable-Coffee-Filter/dp/B000DLB2FI

    1. I came here looking for the snow and was so pleased to see it! Thanks DM! And thanks for all you do all year for this blog and for our community!

  3. Any chance we could convince the City to have the Recycling truck come around the day after Christmas? A bonus pick-up. My front porch is loaded with cardboard boxes and wrapping paper.

    1. Don’t think it’s practical to cover the whole city in one day. Besides, a lot a wrapping paper is not recyclable due to dyes and coatings.

    2. City recycling came by here this morning — and like Steve said, we only recycled the plain brown wrapping paper, not the shiny stuff… But we had tons of boxes and paper anyway, so I was surprised and pleased to have empty bins today!

  4. Shout out to DM for helping us find in-law’s lost dog. Hooked us up with the Good Samaritan Wally (GSM) without need of a blog post. And a million thanks to Wally! Good neighbor.

  5. I think I dropped my Nissan fob while on a walk in Decatur. Here are some of the streets I was on: Fairview, Montgomery, Oakland, Ponce de Leon Place, Coventry, Woodlawn, Nelson Ferry. If you happen to see it, I would greatly appreciate your picking it up and replying to this. Thank you!

        1. Amazing that it all worked out, considering it fell out of my pocket while on a long walk, and I had no idea where.

  6. Bought a Fitbit Flex (and like it so far–12 hours in!). It came with two wrist bands, Small and Large. The Small fits me, so I’d love to trade the Large Slate band for a Small Black one. (Only interested in new, never worn.) Any takers here?

  7. Does the street cleaner still run? I think ours was supposed to come on the fourth Monday but they never showed. Those pine needles have been laying in the street for a month or two.

  8. I think the city should get a refund on the street painting in front of the fire station. It is a complete mess after less than a month.

  9. Dos Madres: We liked the quesadillas (nice cheeses!) and guacamole (especially the roasted corn on top) the best of what we ordered.

  10. Definitely NOT enjoying the new personalized pop-up ads in the middle of the page here. Isn’t there enough of that everywhere else?

      1. I understand the business model that makes paid ads an inescapable reality on free sites. But this latest wrinkle, on this page, is not only intrusive to an unprecedented degree but also interferes with scrolling to the point that it may not be worth the struggle.
