Hello from DecaturCyn / ClarkstonCyn! Looking for adventures just down the road? A fellow former Decaturite and I have just launched http://www.DestinationClarkston.com, a grassroots website that features events, volunteer opportunities, restaurants, and shopping options in the South’s most globally diverse community. Happy holidays!
How is it that Decatur got stuck with the worst Chick-Fil-A in Georgia? I know it sounds petty, but my order is wrong at least as much as it is right, and service is excruciatingly slow compared to almost any other Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta. Anyone else experiencing this, or is it just me?
It’s definitely not the worst. I think they are just crazy busy.
The drive-thru, last night, was 15 cars deep pretty consistently. Went inside and the dining was just as full. It’s just a busy, busy Chick-Fil-A
It’s much worse than the one on N Druid Hills Rd near Target, the one on Howell Mill Rd at I-75, or the one on Northside Parkway at I-75… they are consistently that busy but accurate with order completion and expeditious in service
We’ve always been impressed with the Northlake one. No matter how busy, they keep people moving at the cashier and there is always floor staff working to deliver your food and handle drink refills. Kudos to the mangers there, I always see them scurrying around doing a million things at once.
I’ve had mostly good experiences there, the one exception being the day of the Book Festival, but that’s completely understandable.
I love the fact that our local teens are employed there. Maybe our teens aren’t the swiftest, but I love to see their faces in the window.
I’ve had more problems with other customers there (e.g., cutting in the drive-through line) than I ever have with the staff. All pleasant experiences whenever I interact with them!
Agree. The drive-thru is the slowest I have ever experienced. When I mentioned this they seemed surprised.
I wonder if the kids in car/longer customer ordering time plays into the longer drive through time. I’m thinking those other locations have more single commuters/less families?
Good point. I happen to know for a fact that cars sometimes pull up that sound like this “We’ll have two number 5s with Sprites, please. Wait do you have Dr. Pepper? (I thought you kids said you knew what you wanted.) Do you have chocolate milkshakes or just cookies and cream? (You’ve got a choice milk shake or ice cream cone, not both. I already made that clear.) Okay, I’m sorry, we’re going to have to cancel this order and drive back around while we get our acts together. (This is it. If you guys can’t stop fighting and get your orders together, we are never coming here again. I don’t Chick Fil A’s politics anyway. I know I’ve said that before but sometimes we’re running real late and Chick Fil A is so handy. But I mean it this time.)
Did anyone attend the tree lighting event last night downtown? Am I the only one who doesn’t like the new “tree” sculpture?
I think the lights look nice and I appreciate the businesses who put on such a nice event. Big deal if it isn’t a real tree. There are greater things to worry about in life.
+1
It looked like a Festivus pole with lights.
In past years a crew from Little Shop of Stories, along with some friends, would drive up to a tree farm in north Georgia and cut down a 50 foot tree. They would chop off the top half, load it onto a trailer, and drive it back to Decatur. We would then lift it off the trailer and drag it to the sidewalk in front of Little Shop. Using ropes, a bunch of us on the roof would lift the top of the tree so that it would be leaning against the building. Scissor lifts were brought in so we could attach lights and bulbs. The wonderful folks at Kings Tree Experts would come with their crane and lift it onto a very large stand (fortified by cinder blocks) on the roof. The tree would be strapped in and a steel cable was tied from the tree to the building to keep it from falling off and onto the sidewalk in case of high wind. In January we would cut down the tree, take off the lights and ornaments, chop it to pieces, toss it off the roof (the fun part!), and haul it to recycling. With the exception of the people at Kings, none of us were skilled at doing this work. Many stormy nights we would drive back to the shop at 2 a.m. to make sure that there were no problems.
We did a good deal of research this year to come up with a more workable solution. No, it’s not a real tree. But is much more visable at night and I find it to be quite attractive. We’ll sleep better, as well.
All the great Decatur businesses who contribute to making this happen hope you enjoyed the lighting last night and that you enjoy the new tree!
Thank you Dave and Diane and the LSS crew. You could easily NOT do this. But you did this. And we are all better for it. Mucho gracias!
+1 to infinity
No good deed goes unpunished, Dave. Lord love ya!

My family and I have certainly appreciated this extravaganza for the last few years!!! We are disappointed with the complaints about the changes. We understand why such changes were made. Above all else we enjoyed the sense of community that you have helped continue to build. We love your shop and will continue to spend our local dollars there!
Hey Griswald, where you going to put a tree that big?
Bahaha!!
Thanks Dave! It’s great to have you in our community!
Thanks for all you do, Dave and the LSOS Crew! You all make the holidays in Decatur wonderful!
P_J,
you’re in charge of next year’s christmas tree. the only rule is you have to please everybody.
thanks.
First people started stealing my underscores and now my curmudgeoness as well? Bah Humbug!
Didn’t we just passed a tree ordinance in COD?
“only 3 trees are removed within the 18 month period”
It smells fishy how contractors are getting away with things in COD
211 S McDonough St Decatur, GA 30030
10+ Trees were cut down and it seems like more are coming down soon

[edited: please don’t link to items that provide people’s personal info. thanks]
‘Cause they’re waiting for me
They’re looking for me
Every single night
They’re driving me insane
Those men inside my brain
The tree police, they live inside of my head (live inside of my head)
The tree police, they come to me in my bed (come to me in my bed)
The tree police, they’re coming to arrest me, oh, no
Methinks you misunderestimate what the tree ordinance says and does…
Sorry, did not know I was not supposed to post a public document posted on the worksite for everyone to see. Smells fishy
How so? DM is privately owned. DM can decide to not post people’s personal info, notwithstanding the fact the document in question is of public record.
This is a conspiracy and EVERYONE IS IN ON IT!
The “no personal information without consent” rule smells fishy?
William, it is allowable under the tree ordinance to cut down more than 3 trees- the property owner just has to pay and/or replant to replace the canopy. There are some rules about percentage of trees that must stay up, but if all the trees are in the middle of the lot where a house of a certain size is permitted to be built, then even those preservation percentages are waived.
Not so long ago, in the course of one week, I saw the tree ordinance referred to as both “toothless” and “draconian” in online conversations. It must have turned out alright if both extremes hate it.
Hi William,
It wouldn’t be the first time that a developer “made a mistake” . If you think there’s something wrong with what you’re seeing on McDonough , you can contact the City’s Arborist and ask her to come out and take a look. She’s pretty responsive, and she will let you know if the trees were properly removed.
Another tree lighting event this weekend – Oakhurst Community Tree Lighting – 6.30pm, Sunday December 7th, at Harmony Park (at the intersection of Oakview Rd & East Lake Dr).
The Oakhurst Community Choir will perform some carols, a Hanukkah song, and a piece in Old Norse from the movie Frozen. Come out to listen (and sing along) while enjoying some hot drinks provided by Kavarna and homemade cookies!
Oh, thank goodness for reminding us. You don’t know how much trouble I am in for forgetting to mention to family members with ingrown earbuds that last night was the tree lighting at the Square. My suggestion to remove earbuds and pay attention to the world in front of them was not well received.
The Oakhurst Community Choir invites you to join us this Sunday, December 7th, at 6.30pm in Harmony Park (at the intersection of Oakview Road and East Lake Drive), for a performance of carols and holiday songs with hot drinks provided by Kavarna, fresh-baked cookies, a craft activity for the kids, and – of course – the ceremonial lighting of the neighborhood tree, organized by the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association.
Hope to see you there for some festive fellowship and fun!
DM- Anyone ever get back to you about the students staying not being in the best interest and what that meant? I feel like 4 days would be enough to respond considering it’s been in the works for (years?)
And isn’t the Board deciding on Tuesday? Soon it will be too late to make a difference.
Yes sorry. Crazy week. They said they don’t have written legal advice to share. They offered to let me see the tape of the last meeting, but I won’t be able to make the time before the next meeting.
Was there any context with this statement?
Could be read as:
We are not sharing our legal reasons
or
We have no legal reasons to support the comment
If they are saying that nothing has changed from a legal perspective since the last meeting, that means there is no “blackline” legal reason to not let the kids stay. There was a lot of talk from the board attorney, but he never said “this is illegal and yoyu should not do it”. He did say there are legal risks and he could not recommend it. It’s also not a secret that the supt is not in favor of letting the kids stay. I think it’s time for this new Board to stand up and do the right thing by these kids.
+100
+100 x a million bajillion!
If you are looking for something to do Saturday morning, Turning Sun School is having their 2nd Annual Craft Fair and Artist Market on Saturday, December 6th from 10am-2pm. Over 25 local makers and artists (Vintage Fusion, Cherokee Moon Mixology, Coleccion Luna and many more) will have their stuff for sale. The Good Food Truck will be there with lots of delicious items. We will have a bake sale, petting zoo, bounce house, and crafts for the kids. There will also be a freecycle/holiday junktique table (bring something you no longer want and get something you do want). The fair will be at our East Lake Campus at 2500 Hosea L Williams Dr Atlanta, GA 30317. Hope to see you there!
So, has anyone tried Twisted Soul, the new restaurant that is where Mar used to be? I think we’re going to go check it out this weekend, so just wanted some opinions in advance…
Looked like Santa fell at the end of the festivities last night. Is he ok?
Only disappointment for us was that it was very difficult to hear the choir.
Are there any protests/gatherings planned in Decatur in response to the Eric Garner decision? Would love to show that it’s not just Atlanta that’s feeling sad and angered…
Agreed, that decision was an outrage.
Currently looking for employment, I have previous experience in customer service, administrative and hospitality mgmt duties. I have a college degree and have several years of working in a professional environment. Looking for administrative, office career. Any suggestions in the Decatur area or Atlanta area. Thanks
So what happened Friday evening on Scott somewhere around Garden that caused detours?
Huge 2 car wreck at Garden Lane. Someone on Scott outbound must have hit an inbound car turning across traffic into Garden Ln. Looked like they had trouble getting them out of the car. Pregnant woman passenger. Five emergency trucks responded and at least 3 or 4 police cars. Traffic totally blocked in both directions. Passengers had to be transported by emergency vehicles. Hope they are ok. Decatur has terrific first responders.
Dos Madres Cantina = Open.
We went for lunch today and it was great. Definitely will do our best to keep it open.
So if Grady is our only local trauma center, and they no longer accept BCBS insurance, what would you do if they transported you there?
My assumption is they would stabilize you, then move you when it was possible. As far as how the billing works I don’t know. If the trauma is deemed severe enough (multiple gunshots on a police officer etc…), I believe that now they will literally bypass Dekalb to get you to Grady. Must add I am no expert
Re-phrasing for you: BCBS won’t pay for Grady, not that Grady won’t take BCBS. Trauma care costs, and BCBS is trying to shortchange Metro Atlanta/Grady.
Trauma/emergencies are still covered and some other services. It would be a PR nightmare on both sides if people starting declaring bankruptcy because they couldn’t pay for trauma care because it was out of network.
That is good news
Pete the Cat was at the CHOA Christmas Parade! Cute little blue fur ball.
Waking up to sad news this morning. Hopefully the police have enough to find and arrest the criminal(s).
What happened?
Woman shot by the parking deck in Downtown Decatur. According to the news, she was left in the road and found by passers by. Police haven’t identified the victim yet.
