Decatur Christmas Tree Lighting This Thursday Night at 7pm
Decatur Metro | December 3, 2014 | 12:47 pmDave at Little Shop sends along this announcement…
We hope to see you on East Court Square Thursday at 7 p.m. for one of Decatur’s most wonderful annual traditions. It might be 60 degrees tomorrow night, but it’s still time for the Decatur Tree Lighting! Little Shop of Stories and other local businesses are kicking off the holiday season with carols from the 4/5 Academy, snacks, hot chocolate, snow, and a visit from Santa!!! This year, there will at least one exciting change — a customized light installation to replace the live tree. This tree-shaped installation will still sit on the roof above Little Shop of Stories and will be a more sustainable, workable option for future years.
Thanks to all the local businesses who helped make this possible this year: 17 Steps, Appolinsky & Associates, Café Alsace, Cakes & Ale, The Cooks Warehouse/Sherlock’s, Decatur Downtown Development Authority, Fabu Spa, Greene’s Fine Foods, Harry Norman Realtors, Homegrown, Leon’s Full Service, McCurdy & Candler, Mudhouse Design, My Own Bookkeeper, Private Bank of Decatur, Salon Red, Salon Red Kids, Squash Blossom, Starbucks,Steinbeck’s Ale House, Universal Joint, Verisail Partners, Vivid Boutique, Wild Oats & Billy Goats, J.M. Wilkerson Construction, and Worthmore Jewelers.
Here’s hoping we all don’t get replaced by more sustainable, workable options…

Hey, you stole my kvetch. 😉
Here’s hoping you never own a business and are subject to potential liability. Scrooge!
I have no problem with the business owners doing whatever they choose as far as putting up a tree or opting for a light display instead. I think that it’s a lovely service they do for the community and it’s always a very enjoyable event. I hope it brings the business owners lots of extra holiday business and that they thrive.
But I am curious about your comment about potential liability. What additional liability does having a tree present?
Heavy winds and the tree falling into a busy business area. I am sorry for being so frank. My family does all it can to support local businesses. I also appreciate the risks that are taken to provide community services.
See Dave’s comment under FFAF. Sounds like it was logistically unrealistic to keep up the real tree tradition. I still miss the giant real tree on top of the Fidelity Building (or was that real?). At least this time a reasonable alternative has continued. We had several years with no tree at all which meant one less fun community event. The community part is the best part.
hard to believe that as long as i’ve lived here, tonight was my first tree lighting. very nice time mit me, meine kinder, wife, and German father-in-law, who, in spite of only speaking three words of English, intrepidly plows into any conversation at full steam.
loved hearing the kids sing, and was impressed with the hip instrumental arrangements. i think the choir director’s name is Mr. Brooks—you and your kids rocked it, brah.
vee vill be back.
I think there were more people there than ever before.
